Aboard the USS New York - The Navy's newest ship sailed up the Hudson River on Monday morning, with its bow stem - made from 7.5 tons of World Trade Center steel - leading the way past ground zero.
Hundreds of sailors and Marines lined the rails of the amphibious transport dock, a $1 billion ship that bears the name of the city where the war on terror began eight years ago.
"It's pretty much a professional dream come true," said Cmdr. Curt Jones, of Binghamton, N.Y., the ship's captain. "These guys have come a long way to get us here. It was a combination of sheer humbleness, coupled with intense pride."
As the ship sailed past the World Trade Center site, seven Marines fired a 21-gun salute.
Lee Ielpi, whose firefighter son was killed on 9-11, couldn't hold back his tears.
"I thought about my son, how proud he is and all of them, how proud they'd be at this moment," he said. "There was a lot of mixed emotions."
Crewmember FC2 Kenneth Ruth, 27, of Florence, Ky., took it all in as the ship sailed into Pier 88, where it will be docked all week.
"It was awesome," said Ruth, who is a fire controlman. "It was a huge honor to be here. A once in a lifetime experience."

Time to send her out for some payback. Some of that 9-11 WTC steel should be used to make missiles. :usa: :soldier:
