President Barack Obama said the September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees will be put on trial in New York City.
Speaking in Tokyo, Mr Obama said Mohammed, the self-proclaimed organiser of the al-Qaeda terrorist plot that killed almost 3,000 people in 2001, would face "exacting" US justice.
Bringing such notorious suspects to US soil to face trial would be a key step in Mr Obama's plan to close the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay.
Mr Obama initially planned to close the centre at the US naval base on Cuba by Jan 22 next year, but his administration is no longer expected to meet that deadline.
It is also a major legal and political test of Mr Obama's overall approach to terrorism. If the case suffers legal setbacks, the administration will face second-guessing from those who never wanted it in a civilian courtroom.
The New York case may force the court system to confront a host of difficult legal issues surrounding counter-terrorism programmes begun after the 2001 attacks, including the harsh interrogation techniques once used on some of the suspects while in CIA custody. The most severe method - waterboarding, or simulated drowning - was used on Mohammed 183 times in 2003, before the practice was banned.
The US attorney general Eric Holder is due to annonce that a major suspect in the bombing of the USS Cole, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, will face justice before a military commission, as will a handful of other detainees to be identified at the same announcement, an official said.
The transfer of the detainees from Guantanamo to New York is not expected to happen for many more weeks because formal charges have not been filed against most of them.

Didn't KS Muhammad already stand trial in military tribunal? Wasn't justice already served for this piece of garbage? He has already admitted to supporting terror against the United states, so now I have to listen to him deny it in court with some slimy worm of a defense attorney saying they got the wrong guy,he's a peaceful muslim? Give me a break.

I must restrain my true feelings about KSM... I have made threats to people concerning this rat and made myself look extreme. When they first caught him I got so mad that a famous Rabbi who was talking at a shul I went to was talking about forgiveness. I got mad because I felt like he was asking me to forgive KSM which I will never do... Anyway, I think it is WRONG to bring him to NYC near where my mother lives. He will certainly use the stage given to him in order to rally more sympathy for the jihad he is waging against us.
The treason which is going on these days is sickening. I was listening to talk radio in my rental car last week and heard a liberal talk show host saying how he hated american troops and american troops were responsible for so many troubles around the world... And this was on Veterans day. I was so shocked I turned the channel quickly looking for something sane on the airwaves.

They say they will try to prove the Bush administration commited crimes aginst humanity by mistreating the 9/11 suspects. There is a chance George W, Dick Cheney and many CIA agents will be locked up for this. All I know is OBama is both stupid and naive and a true hater of freedom and human rights. He will go out of his way to protect Islam and National Socialism. However, Obama has picked the wrong fight and he is in some deep water. If Obama makes war against the CIA and the conservatives he will find himself assassinated very quick. Who will protect the Traitor-in-Chief when he has seeked to arrest the very people who protect him and his familly. There is a chance he will use this as an opportunity to use private security personnel for his protection and take control of the country. I am afraid he might have massive numbers of our soldiers arrested and disarmed and hire foreign militias to seize power of the White House. Yes, far fetched, but not impossible with the right group of dictators. Obama and HOlder are autocratic dictators, but have not the power they need to seize control of the populace. However, it would be there greatest desire to enslave the white race and see muslims and blacks have power of the nation. Also, Obama has no other goal but to weaken the public and make himself greater in his power. Obama utterly hates our military and secret service and is doing all he can to weaken them and infiltrate them. I wouldn't be surprise if Nadil Malik Hasan had some secret connections to the Oval Office. How could a man donating large amounts of money to terrorists in Pakistan and who interacted with Al Queda terrorists, be allowed to walk away free? The guy made $100,000 a year yet lived in a poor , broken down 1 bedroom apartment in some rathole in Texas.
I AM SAYING THAT FORT HOOD WAS AN INSIDE JOB. And 9/11 will be a total coverup which they will try to blame on the Jewish people and George Bush. Obama is not quite as dumb as we think, he knows what he wants and is acting like the humble, sissy boy. However, look what he did, which is giving away some of his more deeper aspirations, he was calling on Congress to stop the investigation of Hasan. I think Obama knows he has some responsibility in this mess and he is afraid that deep probes may come back to haunt him personally.
