I work for a large, supermarket chain. Tonight, a middle-aged Indian woman came up to my register. The first thing she does: she looks at me, points and says: "You're not going to pick up my basket from the ground! You're no gentleman!" I tried to diffuse the anger and said: "Sorry, my back is hurting, with a pained expression on my face. She then lifts the basket up, and puts it on the counter. After this, I'm ringing up the products, and she then points at me and yells: "You're banging my products too hard, when you ring them up; Stop taking advantage of me!" I tell her: "Relax lady, nobody is taking advantage of you. I'm just trying to ring up your products. Following this, I'm bagging for the dot b--ch. She then says very quickly in this very thick, Indian accent: " Put my cookies in one bag, and the other things in the other one." I couldn't understand her, so I said "what?" She then points at me and says: "I think I said very clearly to put the cookies in one bag, and the other things in another." I said:" O.K, calm down lady, I didn't hear you the first time." After bagging, she says:"I'm dissatisfied with your customer service. I'm telling the manager." On her way out the door, I smiled to her and said:" Thanks for complaining about me." She smiled back at me with a devilish grin.
I've noticied that Indian customers never bag for themselves, no matter how large their order is. I guess they think since they have dots in the middle of their heads and worship a god with 8 arms, they think they are better than everybody else. They view themselves as superior to White Americans, and feel that they are supposed to be their servants. They view White Americans as a lower caste that is subservient to them.
Tomorrow, I find out if I get written up and fired, because of that d-t [censored]!

If you are a long time, good employee you should not get fired over one complaint, especially one like this where there was nothing aggriegous that took place.

I complained about some black woman at the local grocery store... They didn't fire her... She still works there, and that store is going downhill..

I don't think Indians (at least the Hindu ones, and it is they that have the dots) are in the same category as blacks.

A friend of mine worked in a department store as a teen. Indians would but the latest record album..take it home..tape it..and then try to return the LP and demand their money back

In my country there is for opened sound storage mediums and software an exeption of the right to return.

True. With me the customers are always right as long as I can take in the bargain. If the customer wants too much from me (money off, working time etc.) I tell him it normally straight in the face.
I think David you should take it not so personal. It is just business. Try depersonalize the customers and make the contact more "technical".

Some people are just like that. I completely understand as I've worked in grocery stores before as a checker. Some people have sucky lives or are upset about something else and decide to take it out on a service worker. In my experience the worst customers are blacks.
Well I'll take that back, THE WORST customers are rich, snobby white people. They want everything JUST SO. They think you should know things you have no way of knowing, too, and will claim a perfectly immaculate package is dented if you move too quickly.

The black lady at my grocery store cant even subtract. Her register broke, and she tried to figure out what she owed me using her mathematics skills, but I guess she didnt have enough fingers and toes, because she just stood their puzzled.
BTW, lets assume this lady was pakistani or Muslim Indian.

The lady wasn't wearing a headcovering. The dots over here think they're a big deal because they're educated and left India. They usually are from a higher caste; that's why they were able to get educated in the first place. In India, they probably treat everyone else like a servant.

She wasn't giving him an opportunity to help her. She started complaining as soon as she walked up. Also just because someone's in a service job doesn't mean that it's ok to be rude to them. Even people in service jobs should be treated with politeness and human dignity.

BUT! We're not talking about a normal customer here. We're talking about someone who probably is on many meds.
How I dealt with people similar to that is simply to smile as if nothing had happened because there is nothing I could have done to please such people.
I understand you that this is not easy to do. But why shorten your life by a few years?

Um ok you didn't like her, but why resort to racist slurs? You come off sounding like a jerk, no offense. This obviously had nothing to do with whether she was Indian or had an accent. If you want to be lazy and argumentative as an employee in a supermarket/retail, that's your choice, but don't expect not to receive complaints about it. People will complain no matter what skin color they have.

Who says they have to? When I worked at a register I always bagged the goods for the customers and never cared or noticed if they pitched in or not because it was my job to bag the groceries. If they help, power to them, but they are not obligated to pitch in. That's why they're called the customer.

Better than everyone else because they don't do your job for you and don't feel that as a customer they shouldn't be serviced? I know you're steamed right now bud, but that's a stretch.

Now you just sound like a stormfronter... I don't think you should label all Indians like this because of a bad encounter you had. This is really irrational.
