I am no expert on Windows {I am a Linux expert} but I believe that you need to download the mp3 codec. On Linux this is a free component but on Windows you may have to pay for the decoder...

Open the file in iTunes or Winamp. Or, alternatively, change the extension from ".mp3" to ".mp2" and it should play in WMP.

If you really nead a codec pack, you can download the Nemo pack.  But im shocked that the audio codecs arent already installed.

Maybe this page will help you out:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx

I think this is all you need though:

Do what ACK suggested. Use the VLC player and you shouldn't have issues playing any media files.

Use VLC, it will play almost anything.

Install the k-lite mega-codec pack if necessary...and then WMP should play anything.
