Bloomberg defends Ground Zero mosque as freedom-of-faith issue. (cowardly animal)
In his fiercest defense yet of the mosque proposed near Ground Zero, Mayor Bloomberg declared yesterday that it must be allowed to proceed because the government "shouldn't be in the business of picking" one religion over another.
"I think it's fair to say if somebody was going to try, on that piece of property, to build a church or a synagogue, nobody would be yelling and screaming," the mayor said.
"And the fact of the matter is that Muslims have a right to do it, too."
Placing the proposed mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site has led to an outcry from opponents, including family members of 9/11 victims, who contend the holy place at 45 Park Place would defile the memories of those who perished in the worst terror attack in US history.
Community Board 1 approved the project Tuesday night by a 29-1 vote after a raucous four-hour hearing in which nine members abstained.
The meeting got so heated that one young girl, whose father is Muslim and mother is Jewish and who went to testify in favor, decided instead to sit silently.
The issue also continues to fuel an intense debate on the Internet. One commenter likened a mosque near Ground Zero to a convent established on the grounds of Auschwitz. Pope John Paul II ordered the nuns to move in 1993 after years of protests from Jewish leaders.
But Bloomberg argued that blocking the 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center would violate the essence of America.
"What is great about America and particularly New York is we welcome everybody, and if we are so afraid of something like this, what does that say about us?" asked the mayor.
"Democracy is stronger than this. You know the ability to practice your religion was one of the real reasons America was founded. And for us to just say no is just, I think, not appropriate is a nice way to phrase it
". . . If you are religious, you do not want the government picking religions, because what do you do the day they don't pick yours?"
Even with Bloomberg on board, the project still has to win approval of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission, because the current building on the mosque site dates to 1857-58 and would have to be razed.
The landmark application has been pending since 1989 and was recently reinstated. The commission is scheduled to hold a hearing and a vote in the early summer.
The mosque's proponents say they are prepared to raise $100 million and hope to accommodate up to 1,500 worshippers on Fridays. About 500 people already use the site for prayers.

Yup, hands down
-
And where are the synagogues, churches, Hindu temples and Buddhist shrines? WHy a mosque? Why honouring the terrorists?
-
Is there any way the construction can be sabotaged?
-
If there is one common element in Islam it is the fact that whenever they take over a country anything that represents the culture & glory of that unfortunate nation is destroyed & a mosque is built near if not completely over it. There can be a mosque any place in NYC but near the World trade ctr. area.
 Perhaps we can convert the site they want to use to a Pig Farm. That might deter them !

I can't imagine that is a message like ...... don't hit us next time, we have mosque like Hamas use children ......
But I still persist to pedophilia subject.
What were the twin towers ? Children porno movies production ?
Does the Freedom Statue is something like a child life, which is getting more hopeful - or not ?
Does the statue holds a Declaration of Independence, that is according to some dreams and free education - or a declaration according a 9 years old marriage manual ?
Who could believe that America doesn't care about religions who protect children, for honor them, with buildings near the twin towers.

I get especially angry when it is Jews and Christians who defend and support mosque projects. They seem to be so stupid and ignorant it hurts. These goodsouls should get kicked alive to see the truth. BUt even if you recite the worst verses of the Quran, showing them videos and photos of atrocities the quranimals commit - they do not WANT to see. Because they'd have to admit that their little ignorant world is wrong. And muzzies are always happy with those stupid ignorant "infidels" that lay out the red carpet and open the doors wide for them to come in and massacre us.
I hope all those goodsouls are the first to be killed slowly by quranimals.

It is a request that whenever the GZM is discussed, a suitable photo of piggie may be attached with it.

That would be good. The GZM will not be built, I am sure that there will be enough opponents to this. But on the other side, politics often does the contrary of the public opinion.

About the only the only good things that can be said about mayor Bloomberg is that he was far better than the other choices the voters in New York City were presented with and he tries to keep the cities finances in order. On social issues the man is an imbecile! Bloomberg is a social liberal.... He plays the part of being a everyday New Yorker but he is nothing but a limousine liberal. I think it would be hard for the city to stop the building of the mosque but they can put an end to the 9-11 commemoration day the muslims have planned for its opening. The City can make the permitting process a living nightmare for the builders if a few simple requests are not agreed to in principle.

I said this when then Rudy left as Mayor of NY we are going to miss him so much. Knowing Rudy Guilianni, do you really think he would allow such an Abomination like this to even be considered? NEVER

Doomberg is a fraud and a traitor. He literally makes me sick. And this proof of him. Building a mosque where the WTC used to be.
-
I have read that the mosque won't really be built that close to GZ, but several blocks away. Where exactly will it be then?

From the news story: "One commenter likened a mosque near Ground Zero to a convent established on the grounds of Auschwitz. Pope John Paul II ordered the nuns to move in 1993 after years of protests from Jewish leaders."
Am I the only JTF-er who fails to grasp the connection here? We could debate all day long about the Vatican's weak response re: atrocities during WWII in Europe. However, I certainly never heard of any fatwas issued by the Vatican, and I never heard of Catholics dancing in the streets when it became apparent what had happened in Europe. Compare that to the last several years of dealing with Islam, capped by 9-11.
To be fair, I've seen some of this thinking on this board, the occasional screwball post laying the evils of Nazi Germany at the feet of Christianity, despite the fact that Hitler was well-known to be a follower of Norse mythology and other bizarre dark beliefs.
As for Bloomberg, he's merely the embodiment of what somebody on this board called 'the cossack mentality', the idea that the only way to survive in the face of an aggressive opponent is to not resist. It exists in liberals of all stripes. Just as disturbing is the lack of courage from that board. Only one member had the guts to vote no? And the nine absentions did even have the guts to commit either way.

Ithica-37,
Antisemitism has its roots deep within Christianity. I think that Hitler was able to tap this Christian antisemitism in order to allow his plan to destroy world Judaism. The Church has a long standing theology that the Jews are allowed to exist in the world as a testament as to what happens to a people who do not accept their 'so-called' savior. Do you think I am making this up? I hope not. Because it is known that the Catholic Church, in the 1960s, revised some of its theology vis-a-vis the Jewish people, concerning the charges of deicide.
I do not blame Christianity for the Holocoust, as surely they were not the forces which brought him to power. But centuries, and centuries, of european antisemitism from the Catholic and Lutheran churches surely contributed to the idea that the Jewish people deserved to be destroyed, and thus many people were able to turn their backs without many moral questions.
This said, Bloomberg is a dirtbag and I will resist him every chance I have.

Well my sister's husband is Italian. And he told me that until the 1990s, pupils in Italy were taught that Jews killed Jesus. This was taught explicitly in Catholic churches!

Masterwolf,
I completely agree. Rudy Giuliani cleaned this city up and he will always be a legend for that.
