For some of the older shows in the archives, we have both .mp3 and RealAudio versions.
I'd like to trim down the size of the archives and I'm wondering if we need to keep the RealAudio versions. It's not a common format any more (I don't think), and mp3 is more flexible because it can be played on more devices. JTF has not produced any RealAudio in several years. All of the current shows are done in .mp3 only.
Please answer the poll. You can assume that if an .mp3 version doesn't exist for a show, I will create one (no show will be lost).

Although Realaudio was a good format for the early web, with a very low bitrate and low quality, today it is not useful because most people have faster connections. I suggest that the RealAudio programs be archived and removed from the server.

As long as none of the old shows are lost I don't see a problem with this.

I don't think have used RA in years.

WestCoastJTF, whatever method of providing the past ' Ask JTF' programs that you find most practical, I totally support your decision.
Thanks again for all of your efforts with the Archives.

I say ditch it.
Its a nuisance to install and clogs up mah computer.
I think converting any old shows to mp3 is a good move.

I use Real Player all the time. We can still play the episodes you saved on Real Player, right? I mean we can play any mps on real player. Do whatever is best for you West Coast

The Real Audio format has seen its day... As long as we do not loose any of the older programs it would be practical to move the old shows into the newer format.

I think all the old shows have long since been converted. But I will double check.
I don't know if the RealAudio player can play mp3 files or not - it's probably been 5-6 years since I last played a RealAudio file :yuck:

RealPlayer is capable of playing a variety of formats, not just RealAudio... As I stated in my first post, RealAudio is an audio format which was designed with low bitrate, low quality in mind. When the internet was in its infancy we did not have high enough bitrate to support mp3 so there were a variety of low bitrate formats which sprang up. But mp3 is currently the most versatile format of all the audio formats...
I think RealPlayer can play mp3...

Yes, real audio has gone the way of the Dodo. It should be put out to pasture.

So how to people listen to mp3s?
