He has seen every attempt at peace with the arabs fail, and after so many times, one has to just say it is not going to happen...

I think he made a good point about there being a Biblical reason for it too.

But the real reason he survived for any length of time is that he came to Israel in 1937. Had he stayed in Poland or Russia or wherever, he probably would have perished in the Shoah.

I think he is Teimani (Yemenite). I dont know I might be wrong. Many of them live long healthy lives and stick strictly to the Halachot of the Rambam including his Halahic rules and positions on healthy living including diet, exercise, hygiene, etc.
