I'm not a fan of puppeteers but I've a nagging fear
someone else is pulling at the strings
Something terrible is going down through the entire town
wreaking anarchy and all it brings
I can't sit idly, no, I can't move at all
I curse the name, the one behind it all...
Discord, I'm howlin' at the moon
And sleepin' in the middle of a summer afternoon
Discord, whatever did we do
To make you take our world away?
Discord, are we your prey alone,
Or are we just a stepping stone for taking back the throne?
Discord, we won't take it anymore
So take your tyranny away!
I'm fine with changing status quo, but not in letting go
Now the world is being torn apart
A terrible catastrophe played by your symphony,
what a terrifying work of art!

A lot of fan music for ponies is pretty good. I think Obama reminds me of Discord because he has divided the country even further and created more discord and disharmony than there was before he came into power.
Discord's also a mixed up species with different parts of different animals called a Draconeqqus which also reminds me of mixed Obama.

The reverb in the song bought back memories of how the AM and also many FM radio music broadcasts use to sound before stereo broadcasting became more or less the standard form of radio broadcasting... Some radio stations would use the reverb all the time even while the DJ or news report was talking... It sounded great back then but now seems slightly annoying.

One thing they haven't fixed yet is that if you have a slightly bad reception in the radio some consonants like 's', 'ts' sound like cellophane paper being abused.

One thing they haven't fixed yet is that if you have a slightly bad reception in the radio some consonants like 's', 'ts' sound like cellophane paper being abused.
I guess something being transmitted over the air like that will always have some sort of limitations... Years ago FM radio from a strong station was limited to 15 or 20 miles... Fence and lamp posts on the highway would cause a flagging effect in the reception... Today most of that is gone and FM now goes out 50 or 60 miles... Even AM has come a long way in sound quality... Years ago even a small overpass on the highway would kill off the station today that no longer seems to happen... They have even managed to broadcast in AM stereo to some limited extent... Up until the 70's AM use to be the dominant broadcast band most people used... Most car's only came equipped with an AM radio and there was no point spending money for the more expensive AM FM radio because not much was being broadcast on FM anyway... A rear speaker option was a big upgrade back then... :::D In the early 70's FM converters and under the dash retrofits to AM car radios was a big item due to the fact that many music stations started to broadcast in stereo sound... AM became relegated to news and talk radio and FM became the radio band most people listened to for entertainment since the newer FM stations broadcast in stereo which made the AM broadcasts sound flat... Today's satellite radio reminds me a bit of the old time radio reception... It sounds great if the receiver is sitting in one place however put it in a car and move around a bit and you get all sorts of dead spots and poor sound quality... I guess over time that will improve also.

Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
"Observe" and "Remember" in a single word,
He caused us to hear, the One and Only Lord.
G-d is One and His Name is One,
For renown, for glory and in song.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
To welcome the Shabbat, let us progress,
For that is the source, from which to bless.
From the beginning, chosen before time,
Last in deed, but in thought - prime.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Sanctuary of the King, city royal,
Arise, go out from amidst the turmoil.
In the vale of tears too long you have dwelt,
He will show you the compassion He has felt.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Arise, now, shake off the dust,
Don your robes of glory - my people - you must.
Through the son of Jesse, the Bethelemite,
Draw near to my soul, set her free from her plight.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Wake up, wake up,
Your light has come, rise and shine.
Awaken, awaken; sing a melody,
The glory of G-d to be revealed upon thee.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Be not ashamed, nor confounded,
Why are you downcast, why astounded?
In you, refuge for My poor people will be found,
The city will be rebuilt on its former mound.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
May your plunderers be treated the same way,
And all who would devour you be kept at bay.
Over you Your G-d will rejoice,
As a groom exults in his bride of choice.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
To right and left you'll spread abroad,
And the Eternal One you shall laud.
Through the man from Peretz's family,
We shall rejoice and sing happily.
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.
Come in peace, her Husband's crown of pride,
With song (on Festivals: rejoicing) and good cheer.
Among the faithful of the people so dear
Enter O Bride, enter O Bride;
O Bride, Shabbat Queen, now come here!
Come out my Beloved, the Bride to meet;
The inner light of Shabbat, let us greet.

-
Some various versions of 'Kol HaOlam Kulo'... It is such an essential message in a world were it is easy to be frightened by the circumstances. It takes rock-steady faith to look forward and not be afraid of what is around the next corner. I have been dealing with so many things which came out from left field, all of the sudden (which is one reason I am taking today off)... But once the Shabbat begins, it is like another world (actually the sages say it is like another world)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njtLDHvp6jw

I may have posted this before (I know I posted it in the Torah section at least twice) but this hip-hop and rock fusion song is based on the 'Kol HaOlam Kulu' theme, that life is a 'narrow bridge' and the 'main thing is not to fear at all'.
If you are prejudice against hiphop then skip it, but otherwise give it a listen...

Inspiration, move me brightly...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NDvGUfMTDI
Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme, suggesting rhythm,
That will not forsake you, till my tale is told and done.
While the firelights aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow,
Till things weve never seen will seem familiar.
Shadows of a sailor, forming winds both foul and fair all swarm.
Down in carlisle, he loved a lady many years ago.
Here beside him stands a man, a soldier from the looks of him,
Who came through many fights, but lost at love.
While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks;
Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there.
Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair,
She takes her fan and throws it, in the lions den.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance.
The sailor gave at least a try, the soldier being much too wise,
Strategy was his strength, and not disaster.
The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him.
That's how it stands today. you decide if he was wise.
The story teller makes no choice. soon you will not hear his voice.
His job is to she'd light, and not to master.
Since the end is never told, we pay the teller off in gold,
In hopes he will return, but he cannot be bought or sold.
Terrapin station
Inspiration, move me brightly. light the song with sense and color;
Hold away despair, more than this I will not ask.
Faced with mysteries dark and vast, statements just seem vain at last.
Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to terrapin.
Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright;
The spiral light of venus, rising first and shining best,
On, from the northwest corner, of a brand new crescent moon,
While crickets and cicadas sing, a rare and different tune,
Terrapin station.
In the shadow of the moon, terrapin station.
And I know well get there soon, terrapin station.
I can't figure out, terrapin, if it's the end or beginning, terrapin,
But the trains put it's brakes on, terrapin,
And the whistle is screaming, terrapin.
Terrapin station - at the siding
While you were gone, these faces filled with darkness.
The obvious was hidden. with nothing to believe in,
Sullen wings of fortune beat like rain.
Youre back in terrapin for good or I'll again, for good or I'll again.

Wake up and realize you are the eyes of the world...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGNPL-NNJRI
Right outside this lazy summer home
You aint got time to call your soul a critic no.
Right outside the lazy gate of winters summer home,
Wondrin where the nut-thatch winters,
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own.
There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away,
And there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay.
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay,
And night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own.
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own,
And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home,
Sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone,
Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
The heart has it's beaches, it's homeland and thoughts of it's own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin brings,
But the heart has it's seasons, it's evenins and songs of it's own.
Sorry for all the edits

Great songs... I used to have all the Moody Blues albums and CDs. Now I don't know where my old CD collection is these days (maybe some are still in the garage)... I remember listening to 'A question of Balance' many times in the 80s...

New 'Jewish' music in the style of the great Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, Breslov and Lubavitch (Chabad) Niggunim...

During a recent trip to Vienna, Austria by Chaim Gold, a 27-year-old musician from Jerusalem, a new music video was produced on his brand new hit song Veahavatcha.
In the video, Gold is a tourist in Vienna traveling to various locations as he sings to fellow Jews he meets along the way.
“My musical inspirations," says Chaim, "derive from a combination of Breslev, Chabad, and Carlebach music.”
Gold, who is a well-known vocalist in the Israeli Jewish music scene, is currently working on his debut album with original songs written and composed by him. His goal is to create a new genre in Jewish music that will talk to both teens and adults alike.
"Vea-ha-vatcha" was composed by Chaim Gold, produced by Zafrir Yifrach. Music video by Danny Finkelman.

Ok, now for something 'entirely' different... I wanted to post this video last week, when we read about the birth of Essau the brother of Jacob... The dead did a song which somewhat follows the bibles narrative (and deviates in other ways).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RczcfjtWEHw
-
I really cannot believe I am posting this video.... But here it goes anyway...
I gave up on Led Zepplin many years ago when I used to listen to FM radio. All the FM stations, even today, over-play Led Zepplin and especially the song 'Stairway to Heaven' and this is the reason I have not listened to Stairway to Heaven in over 10 years (except for once when I turned on my FM radio in my car and it was on).
But it occurs to me that the song 'Stairway to Heaven' could be a description of the Ladder which Jacob saw in his dream.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHFxncb1gRY
Now for a 'comedy' look at Stairway to Heaven:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QFDsUgjqIo
Wow, that is not a coincidence.... Harry Belefonte did a rendition of 'Stairway to Heaven' on the K-Tel 'Stairways to Heaven' album... He was the last one listed in the advertisement.
And last but not least, a rendition of 'Jacobs Ladder' by Rush:

Great Metallica song...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwPg8gJq_Kw
(And the road becomes my bride)
And the road becomes my bride
I have stripped of all but pride
So in her I do confide
And she keeps me satisfied
Gives me all I need
And with dust in throat I crave
Only knowledge will I save
To the game you stay a slave
Roamer, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will
But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
(And the earth becomes my throne)
And the earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
Under wandering stars I've grown
By myself but not alone
I ask no one
And my ties are severed clean
Less I have the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign
Roamer, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll never mind anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind
And I'll take my find anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
I say!
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
Carved upon my stone
My body lie, but still I roam,
Yeah yeah!
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Woah
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Yeah!
Wherever I may wander, wander, wander
Wherever I may roam
Yeah, yeah, wherever I may roam
Yeah, yeah, wherever i may roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam

It's said that music is the closest thing besides Torah to spirituality. After reviewing much of this though, it certainly won't help your spirituality. By inspiring I mean real music that makes the soul feel alive. What do you consider inspiring?

It's said that music is the closest thing besides Torah to spirituality. After reviewing much of this though, it certainly won't help your spirituality. By inspiring I mean real music that makes the soul feel alive. What do you consider inspiring?
Shalom LKZ,
Of course I have thought about what is inspiring. And it is true, as I mentioned in my 'askmuman613' thread, that music has the spiritual potential similar to Torah. Of course it is important to listen to music which instills reverence for G-d, and respect for man. What is inspiring, in my opinion, is that music makes the soul move. When you feel the melody, or the mood of the music, and it causes you to experience a sense of excitement that there is something more to our lives. Animals have never attained the level of musical complexity as humanity has. We have the ability to feel the beat, the harmony, and the progressions and it causes us to feel an emotion. Each person experiences the music differently, and yet each one must evaluate how it makes them feel.
I just was thinking about this obscure Grateful Dead tune, 'Unbroken Chain' which is sung by Phil Lesh (who didn't sing many songs for the Dead)...

The entire Jeff Healy story is both sad and incredible. This man was definitely a talented musician, and his time on this earth was spent spreading the light of music.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Healy
Norman Jeffrey "Jeff" Healey (March 25, 1966 – March 2, 2008) was a blind Canadian jazz and blues-rock vocalist and guitarist who attained musical and personal popularity, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s.
Early life
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Healey was raised in the city's west end. He was adopted as an infant;[1] his adoptive father was a firefighter. When he was one year old, Healey lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes. His eyes had to be surgically removed, and he was given ocular prostheses.
.
.
.
Healey began playing guitar when he was three, developing his unique style of playing the instrument flat on his lap. When he was 15,[2] Jeff Healey formed the band Blue Direction, a four-piece band which primarily played bar-band cover tunes. Among the other musicians were bassist Jeremy Littler, drummer Graydon Chapman, and a schoolmate, Rob Quail on second guitar. This band played various local clubs in Toronto, including the Colonial Tavern.
Healey began hosting a jazz and blues show on radio station CIUT-FM where he became known for playing from his massive collection of vintage 78 rpm gramophone records.[3]
Shortly thereafter he was introduced to two musicians, bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen, with whom he formed a trio, The Jeff Healey Band. This band made their first public appearance at the Birds Nest, located upstairs at Chicago's Diner on Queen Street West in Toronto. They received a write-up in Toronto's NOW magazine, and soon were playing almost nightly in local clubs, such as Grossman's Tavern and the famed blues club Albert's Hall (where Jeff Healey was discovered by guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins).
Illness and death
On January 11, 2007, Healey underwent surgery to remove metastatic tissue from both lungs. In the previous eighteen months, he had two sarcomas removed from his legs.[8]
On March 2, 2008, Healey died of cancer[9] at St. Joseph's Health Centre in his home town of Toronto.[10] He was 41 years old. His death came a month before the release of Mess of Blues, which was his first rock/blues album in eight years.[11]
Healey is survived by his wife, Cristie, and two children.[12] A tribute concert was held on May 3, 2008, to benefit Daisy's Eye Cancer Fund, which, according to Cristie Healey, had helped make major strides in research and future advances for people born with the same genetically inherited retinoblastoma[13] which led to Healey's blindness at eleven months of age. Cristie and Jeff Healey's son was also born with the same disability.[14]
In 2009, Healey was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame.

Now I am careening off into an entirely different direction from classic blues, experimental jazz, etc... Tangerine Dream (which I also happen to have seen) is an electronica / atmosphere music band...

The infamous Geddy Lee of Rush shows that Canadian Jews can sing falsetto style.

Shalom Nachus... Yes indeed Geddy is a Jew... I posted a Rush video a few years ago where he clearly could be seen wearing a Magen David.
Holy Shmoly... Someone recorded the show I saw at Irvine Meadows in 1986 (One of my first Rock shows I saw when I moved to California in 84)...
Saw this show with my 1st High School buddy... Esko Jaska (an ethnic Estonian no less)...

Ok... I bet none of you reading this have ever heard of a band called 'King Crimson'.... This stuff is pretty wild...
Robert Fripp is a unique guitarist and I have heard he uses an alternate tuning... The band also employed one of my favorite drummers, Bill Bruford who is more famous for playing with the band 'Yes'.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lUKb53neH4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_crimson
King Crimson are a progressive rock band. Founded in London in 1968 by a group of musicians from western England (but featuring a transatlantic lineup from 1981 onwards), the band is widely recognised as a foundational progressive rock group despite the band's own resistance to the label.[5] The band has incorporated diverse influences and instrumentation during its history (including jazz and folk music, classical and experimental music, psychedelic rock, hard rock and heavy metal,[6] New Wave, gamelan, electronica and drum and bass).
The band's line-up has persistently altered throughout their existence, with eighteen musicians and three lyricists passing through the ranks. The only musician to appear in every line-up of the band has been founding guitarist Robert Fripp, although others' tenures have sometimes extended for decades. Due to the number of musicians involved in King Crimson over the years (and the band's emphasis on creativity and on recruiting high-level players) the band is at the hub of a network of other bands and projects, and has been influential to many contemporary musical artists. The band has a large following, despite garnering little radio or music video airplay.[7]

Shalom Muman,
Rush is definitely a great band and some of Geddy's better ballads have lyrics that are brilliant and insightful.
-
I will post some classic Rush shortly Nachus... I saw the band about six times in 20 years of going to shows... One of my all-time favorite bands, and Alex Lifeson is an awesome guitarist.

I did buy Neil Youngs 1982 album Trans... This is a song from that album...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgZj-AEyX30
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_(album)
Trans is the twelfth studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released in 1982. Recorded partially and released during his Geffen era in the 1980s, Trans baffled many Neil Young fans. A Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201[6] features prominently in six of the nine tracks. While the album was poorly received, some critics point out that the melodies are strong and that the album involves Young addressing new musical movements, as he did previously on Rust Never Sleeps and later with the grunge movement on Mirror Ball.
Originally released as an LP, the album was re-issue

Ready for something completely different?
Flash back to 1980s new bands... The Police hit the scene in 77, but achieved popularity in the early 80s. I remember hearing them on the radio back then...

Before continuing with the videos I would like to pause for a moment...
I would like to say 'Baruch Hashem' and thank G-d for the music we have available on the Internet. When I was a kid we did not have YouTube and we used to 'trade tapes' called 'bootlegs' which were usually very low quality. This computer technology which we developed, with Hashems divine help, has enabled us to access so much information with so little effort.
It is a time of Thanksgiving. And I am truly thankful for the technology we have today. I have worked in computer programming and engineering for almost 30 years and have witnessed a blossoming of capability. Everything we have is inspired by Hashem, through his will...
Now back to the thread... Here is Genesis, another great band, performing 'Land of Confusion'.

Ok, time to change things up a little bit...
If anyone has watched those Rush videos they should appreciate Neil Pearts drumming capabilities. This gets me thinking about all the great drummers I know of and some I have seen.
Here is my 1st list of drummers (not in any particular order either)
1) Neil Peart (Rush)
2) Bill Bruford (Yes & King Crimson)
3) Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead, Jewish drummer)
4) Buddy Rich (many bands, Jewish drummer)
5) Ginger Baker (Cream)
Let me start with Neil Peart, from the Snakes and Arrows tour...

Here is a sample of Bill Bruford solo...

Mickey Hart has one of the largest collection of international drums and is an expert at many of them...

Buddy Rich.... What can you say?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVbTTmEmDxY
Here he was in Berlin in 1984:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMBkk6fhY1k

Buddy Rich just tears up that drum-set and his set is so small compared to Niel Pearts set... Buddy really puts a lot of effort into his style as is evidenced by his sweating.

Last, but most certainly not least... Ginger Baker from Cream doing a drum solo...

This song from the Israeli Heavy Metal band Amaseffer is very relevant this week to all Jews. The portion which we read on Shabbat this week is the first portion of Shemot/Exodus which contains the story of the burning bush (sneh),,,,
Hashem, Blessed is he, revealed his glory to Moses the first time in a vision of a bush burning but not being consumed... The sages teach us many incredible lessons from the burning bush...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIsR4eo9PsQ
-
This song is about our teacher, prophet, and redeemer Moses... Baby Moshe was saved from the evil decree of Pharoah to throw all the firstborn Hebrew male babies into the Nile.. He was placed in a small ark by his mother and his sister Miriam, and 'drawn from the water' by the daughter of Pharoah.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zy6Yhnsixc
-
The Egyptians did not enslave us all at once, it was over a period of years that voluntary labor became forced labor. A lot can be learned from our Holy Torah concerning the phenomenon of 'Antisemitism' or Jew hatred. The Egyptians were one of the first nations to turn on the Jews. Remember from Genesis that Egypt was saved from a devastating famine by Joseph, son of Yaakov our patriarch. But when the Jews became too 'numerous' for the comfort of the Pharoah, he devised schemes to 'answer the Jewish problem' including genocide.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJIJzuN7O6o
-
Moshe Rabbeinu (our teacher) was raised in the house of Pharoah, who at the time was the King of the super-power of its time. He was taught how to be a possible prince, heir to the Kingdom. Yet deep down Moshe was aware of his Jewish soul, it would not let him go because he desired to go out and share the labor and burden of the enslaved Hebrew people. This man was the prime example of a person with the trait of Empathy. It is also because he spent a lot of time as a sheppard in Midian when he fled Egypt that he had empathy for the downtrodden people.
Moshe was so concerned about the welfare of the Jewish people that he was inspired to kill an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating a Jew.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpeUQzpsZqI
-
When Moshe fled Egypt he wandered in the desert till he came to Midian. It is in Midian where he met his wife Zipporah and father-in-law Yitro (Jethro)...
Yitro was a 'high priest' of idolatry who came to realize the error of his ways. With the help of Moshe and the G-d of Israel he was able to see the 'hand of G-d' in the events which unfolded regarding the Exodus of the Jewish people from Mitzrayim... Jethro is a prime example of a righteous convert to Judaism...

Isaiah - Chapter 11
9. They shall neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mount, for the land shall be full of knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea bed. ט.
The rest of the prophecy of Isaiah in this chapter is pretty inspiring:
10. And it shall come to pass on that day, that the root of Jesse, which stands as a banner for peoples, to him shall the nations inquire, and his peace shall be [with] honor. י.
11. And it shall come to pass that on that day, the Lord shall continue to apply His hand a second time to acquire the rest of His people, that will remain from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Sumeria and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea.
12. And He shall raise a banner to the nations, and He shall gather the lost of Israel, and the scattered ones of Judah He shall gather from the four corners of the earth.
13. And the envy of Ephraim shall cease, and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not envy Judah, nor shall Judah vex Ephraim.
14. And they shall fly of one accord against the Philistines in the west, together they shall plunder the children of the East; upon Edom and Moab shall they stretch forth their hand, and the children of Ammon shall obey them.

Ok... This is a long classic Yes tune from the 'Tales from Topographic Oceans' release...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAgp3TdtrW4
Dawn of light lying between
A silence and sold sources
Chased amid fusions of wonder
In moments hardly seen forgotten
Colored in pastures of chance
Dancing leaves cast spells of challenge
Amused but real in thought
We fled from the sea whole
Dawn of thought transfered through moments
Of days under searching earth
Revealing corridors of time provoking memories
Disjointed but with purpose
Craving penetrations offer links
With the self instructors sharp
And tender love as we took to the air
A picture of distance
Dawn of our power we amuse
Re descending as fast as misused
Expression, as only to teach love as
To reveal passion chasing
Late into corners, and we danced from the ocean
Dawn of love sent within us
Colors of awakening among the many
Won't to follow, only tunes of a different age
As the links span our endless caresses
For the freedom of life everlasting
Talk to the sunlight caller
Soft summer mover distance mine
Called out a tune but I never saw the face
Heard but not replaced
I ventured to talk, but I never lost my place
Cast out a spell rendered for the light of day
Lost in lights array, I ventured to see
As the sound began to play
What happened to this song we once knew so well?
Signed promise for moments caught within the spell
I must have waited all my life for this moment, moment
The future poised with the splendor just begun
The light we were as one
And crowded through the curtains of liquid into sun
And for a moment when our world had filled the skies
Magic turned our eyes
To feast on the treasure set for our strange device
What happened to wonders we once knew so well?
Did we forget what happened surely we can tell
We must have waited all our lives for this, moment, moment
Moment
Starlight, movement, reasons
Release forward tallest rainbow
Sun shower seasons, fife flower reasons
They move fast, they tell me
But I just can't believe that I can feel it
There's someone to tell you
Amid the challenge we look around in unison with you
Getting over overhanging trees, let them rape the forest
Thoughts would send our fusion
Clearly to be home
Getting over wars we do not mean or so it seems so clearly
Sheltered with our passion, clearly to be home
They move fast, they tell me
But I just can't believe they really mean to
There's someone, to tell you and I just can't
Believe our song will leave you
Skyline teacher, warland seeker
Send out poison, cast iron leader
And through the rhythm of moving slowly
Sent through the rhythm work out the story
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past
Young Christians see it from the beginning
Old people feel it, that's what they're saying
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past
They move fast, they tell me
But I just can't believe they really mean to
There's someone, to tell you
A course towards a universal season
Getting over overhanging trees
Let them rape the forest
They might stand and leave them
Clearly to be home
Getting over wars we do not mean
We charm the movement suffers
Call out all our memories
Clearly to be home
We've moved fast
We need love
A part we offer is our only freedom
What happened to this song we once knew so well?
Signed promise for moments caught within the spell
We must have waited all our lives for this moment, moment
Past present movers, moments we'll process the future
But only through him we know, send flowered rainbows
A piece apart chased flowers of the dark and lights
Of songs to follow and show all we feel for
And know of cast round, you seekers of the truth
Accepting that reason will relive and breath and hope
And chase and love for you and you and you

I hope someone out there likes Yes as much as I do... I saw Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe (ABWH) in 1989 in Santa Barbara California... They are the main members of YES who got together that year to release this album...

While I was thinking of the concept of 'Mesorah', the idea of an 'Unbroken Chain' of tradition which has been passed down from our ancestors all the way from the revelation of Sinai, the melody of the Grateful Dead's 'Unbroken Chain' entered my consciousness... This is a rare tune, sung by Phil Lesh (who only sings two-three songs in the Dead's repertoire), and one which I find relaxing..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRbBcniI1Ao
Blue light rain, whoa, unbroken chain
Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane
Listening for the secret, searching for the sound
But I could only hear the preacher and the baying of his hounds
Willow sky, whoa, I walk and wonder why
They say love your brother but you will catch it when you try
Roll you down the line boy, drop you for a loss
Ride out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross
November and more as I wait for the score
They're telling me forgiveness is the key to every door
A slow winter day, a night like forever
Sink like a stone, float like a feather
Lilac rain, unbroken chain
Song of the Saw-Whet owl
Out on the mountain it'll drive you insane
Listening to the winds howl
Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls
Unbroken chain of sky and sea
Unbroken chain of the western wind
Unbroken chain of you and me
I realize the song has nothing to do with our 'Mesorah'... But I would like to share this concept...
http://www.torahtots.com/parsha/devarim/shoftim2.htm
It all comes down to Mesorah, the unbroken chain of Torah. From the time that Moshe received the Torah and oral law from Hashem, the commandments were passed down directly: first to Yehoshua, then to the elders, then to the judges and finally to the Sanhedrin. To disobey the Sanhedrin is the same as disobeying the very word that Moshe received from Hashem at Har Sinai.

Symphonic Power-Goth Metal (underrated band)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRFOI8jNkAM
lyrics:
Intense light will slowly break the shadow
Penetrating the sorrow of obscurity
Behind the end of silence
Like a perpetual fire infinite time will burn
Leaving behind just the ashes of despair
Like a tempest it will wipe out the traces
Of sadness
Giving light to every forgotten being
I will meet you in the shadow
I will wind your body
By holding tight your cold hands
I will give you back the heat and ancient light
You will erase the past
The power of light will destroy defects
And will kiss those who are weeping
You will erase the past
And will never shed a tear because of it.

When I was in college in the 80's and I first started to listen to the GD, my 'favorite song' came from the 'American Beauty' album...
This song, 'Ripple' still makes a psychological impression on me...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKb9pFTsUVI
"Ripple"
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.
There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.
La dee da da da, La da da da da, Da da da, Da da, Da da da da da
La da da da, La da da, Da da, La da da da, La da, Da da.[/quote]

This tune, also from the 'American Beauty' album is one of the other three songs which are sung by Phil Lesh (the bass guitarist)... The tune, 'Box of Rain'...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKKaOQdqxWE
"Box Of Rain"
Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too
Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A a box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through
Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame
It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

lyrics:
I have two wings
I can fly between past and future
I can dance in next winter and swim in past summer
I can watch your childhood while you're waiting for your death
Can you imagine me without a face?
You feel me by each second of your life
Dying moments of dream
I drown in deadly stream
Dying moments of dream
I put myself in stream

So, being a 'fan' of Alfonso Rachels 'Zonation' segment on PJTV I have obviously heard him talking about his band project '20 lb sledge'... So I thought I'd give it a listen...
Gotta admit I think his Christian message is a bit much sometimes. I have had to stop some of his videos when he gets 'preachy' about his belief in his messiah... I have not listened to this video of 'Divine Battery' but I saw the lyrics and it talks about 'the ghost' which I assume is one of the trinity... So if you don't want to listen, don't...

My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You, in an arid and thirsty land, without water.
As I saw You in the Sanctuary, [so do I long] to see Your strength and Your glory.

"The Garden"
In this one of many possible worlds,
All for the best or some bizarre test?
It is what it is and whatever,
Time is still the infinite jest
The arrow flies when you dream,
The hours tick away,
The cells tick away
The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes,
The hours tick away, they tick away
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
So hard to earn so easily burned
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
So hard to earn so easily burned
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
In the rise and the set of the sun,
'Til the stars go spinning,
Spinning 'round the night
Oh, it is what it is, and forever
Each moment a memory in flight
The arrow flies while you breathe,
The hours tick away,
The cells tick away,
The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve,
The hours tick away, they tick away
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
So hard to earn so easily burned
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
(It's a measure of a life)
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect,
The way you live, the gifts that you give
In the fullness of time,
It's the only return that you expect
The future disappears into memory
With only a moment between.
Forever dwells in that moment,
Hope is what remains to be seen.
Forever dwells in that moment,
Hope is what remains to be seen.
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
(It's a measure of a life)
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
(It's a measure of a life)
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
(It's a measure of a life)
In the fullness of time,
A garden to nurture and protect
(It's a measure of a life)
(It's a measure of a life)
(It's a measure of a life)
(It's a measure of a life)

Just got an email this morning from Matisyahu (his website)... He has a new CD coming out soon... It is called Akeda (I assume an allusion to 'The Akeidah' which was Abrahams 10th and final test)... I have not heard any of it yet. I hope it is good.

Symphonic Religious Metal
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPXaufM9PnA
lyrics:
Her blackened eye reflects the soul
angelic she stands
every minute passes by
with a silent cry
All alone, no one there
her senseless way of life
she tried to tell
but you never listened
Hate for this eternal pain
for never ending grief
for burning down my heart
for crushing my life
Walking now alone
a shadow without light
tears sprinkle my skin
my heart just want to die
Her whole life she felt unloved
unaccepted
just too much for her little heart
and it tears my eyes and eats my soul
this everlasting memory so cruel
feeds my pain
now just a grave is left
all being just black and grey
and nothing's alright
Tears in her eyes
witch no one sees
no friend in her life at all
this false love was the last nail
in her coffin
just enough to leave
You never ever listened
and now she died
you never ever listened
and now she died

This video, by the band 8th day, is posted to remind us of the Brit Milah, which is commanded in the portion we read this coming Shabbat, and was originally commanded to our father Avraham...
From Lech Lecha (Beresheit/Genesis 17:10-12):
10. This is My covenant, which you shall observe between Me and between you and between your seed after you, that every male among you be circumcised.
11. And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be as the sign of a covenant between Me and between you.
12. And at the age of eight days, every male shall be circumcised to you throughout your generations, one that is born in the house, or one that is purchased with money, from any foreigner, who is not of your seed.
From Tazria (Vayikra/Leviticus 12:2-3):
2. Speak to the children of Israel, saying: If a woman conceives and gives birth to a male, she shall be unclean for seven days; as [in] the days of her menstrual flow, she shall be unclean.
3. And on the eighth day, the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

Thank you Bullcat3, I do love that song by 8th day...
Last week my friends son was interested in drumming and drummers and brought up 'African Style' drumming which is something which Mickey Hart, one of the original drummers of the Dead, had quite a bit of experience with all kinds of drums from around the world. Here is a special treat, in the 90s the Grateful Dead had re-invented their sound. They honed their genre's including their Jazzy numbers by having talented co-musicians who would fill in their trademark sound...
Branford Marsalis is one such talented musician. During this period he provided a lush saxophone sound. Branford Marsalis is acknowledged as an accomplished jazz musician...

Sefardic Al Andaluz Project - La Galana y El Mar
A Ladino/Medieval Spanish song that was sung by the Sefardic bride before her marriage to the groom. This is a song that Rambam himself probably listened to and enjoyed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtFiRJ8W9g8
The English Lyrics:
English translation of lyrics:
Now the graceful maiden gets out of the sea
She comes out of the sea
The bride wears a yellow dress
She goes to her husband.
The bride wears a red dress
She goes to her groom.
She comes out of the sea ...
Between a year and a month.
Our bride, how white she is
Between a month and a day,
Our bride, she will bear a child
She comes out of the sea ...
A little pigeon from a good family
How is your father?
How are your brothers?
Walking between the ducats.
She comes out of the sea ..
Now the graceful maiden gets out of the sea
With a dress
In white and pink.
She comes out of the sea ...
Between the sea and the river
There grows a quince tree.
She comes out of the sea ...
Between the sea and the sand
There grows a cinnamon tree.
She comes out of the sea

I fasted the entire fast of Tisha B'Av and MAN it is good to eat food again! Baruch Hashem for the tasty food we have to eat!
Tisha B'Av concluded the 3 weeks of mourning during which we don't listen to music among other rituals...
Now we can listen to MUSIC again, Baruch Hashem he made ears for us to hear. And wisdom to comprehend the lyrics.
Hashem made the Jewish people a nation apart, a special nation which is beloved when we keep his word, and beloved when we have strayed from his word. His forgiveness is everlasting (unlike our forgiveness).

Shema Yisrael is, according to my understanding, the quintessential Jewish prayer and meditation. It states the fundamental concepts of our faith clearly, concisely, and in a way which penetrates to our very souls. First mentioned in the Torah by Jacob on his death-bed when he blessed his sons, the first line is recognized by Jews of every stripe.

Devarim Chapter 25
17. You shall remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you went out of Egypt,
18. how he happened upon you on the way and cut off all the stragglers at your rear, when you were faint and weary, and he did not fear God.
19. [Therefore,] it will be, when the Lord your God grants you respite from all your enemies around [you] in the land which the Lord, your God, gives to you as an inheritance to possess, that you shall obliterate the remembrance of Amalek from beneath the heavens. You shall not forget!

It's not cool to "criticize" Israel, and the Fakestinians are Hamas.
-
LKZ,
For the most part I agree with you but I also disagree with you, and let me explain.
We criticize the Israeli government almost every day. In a way this is criticism of Israel, and when we disagree with Bibi and Livni and Lapid, and criticize them, we are doing so because we love Israel and don't want it to be destroyed. Others who criticize Israels politics are doing so because they do not understand the reality because there is so much misinformation out there. I do think that some Israel criticism does not come from Jew hatred.
And Hamas is the representative for Gaza... They are responsible for the death and destruction. But there are Israeli arabs who do support the state of Israel. Remember Zoabis nephew from last month. There are others who do not speak up about their support of Israel also. Of course they are the minority...

That's like saying that there are Satmar who support the IDF. Their ideology forbids what they do. The Hamas is the Terroristinian Arabs. It's not like saying Obama is America. There is massive disagreement, and the laws of America are against him, despite all the votes he got. Their religion is against the existence of Israel, many are there only to practice their religion on Jews.
I'm not talking about Arabs. Those Arabs that become Noahide can stay before and after Moshiah. I'm talking about Gaza, everyone there is rodef, even if they don't like Hamas, because one way or another, not one of them likes that Israel is a Jewish state, and given any power, would turn it completely into a Hebrew-speaking state of goyim, and an Islamic state (and shortly thereafter, a desert) at worst, G-d forbid.
And anti-Israel criticism does come from Jew-hatred, just many people are brainwashed by Jew-haters and think it isn't Jew-hatred. Almost every day, I recoil in shame that I once said "being anti-Israel isn't being antisemitic" (I was 19), which of course I was repeating word for word from a nazi muslim website I had no idea was nazi. I wasn't a Jew hater, but I was brainwashed with the ideology, and repeating it is promoting Jew-hatred, so I was spreading Jew-hatred without hating Jews, which makes you even a greater threat, and so you have to call attack Israel being a Jew-hater, even if it can just be being an ignoramus and publicizing it.
-
I suppose it depends on what you are criticizing Israel about. As I get more right wing I find myself criticizing Israel more and more.

Well the opposite happens with me. The people are sick of it. They're ready for a revolution if it can just target the government who is destroying Israel and not cause a war.

Shalom and Shana Tovah to everyone! Rosh Hashanah starts one week from tonight, the evening of the 24th of September (next Wednesday night).
The central meditation (kevanah) for Rosh Hashanah is the crowning of Hashem as King of the entire creation. The service starts with the word 'HaMelech' which means 'The King'.
One of the central prayers is called 'Avinu Malkeinu' which means 'Our Father, Our King' and it is sung several times during the High Holiday services.
I find the melody haunting and moving the soul...

“HaMelech The King!” Thus begins our morning prayers on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Throughout the prayers of the Ten Days of Repentance, all references to Hashem are “HaMelech”, Sovereign of the universe, King of the people of Israel. He is called “Holy King” and “the King of Justice.” We ask Him to “rule over the entire world with Your glory” and we declare that “His Sovereignty rules over all.”
Saadia Gaon, in writing about the ten associations of the shofar, says first that the shofar is comparable to the trumpets blown at a coronation. And the custom of Tashlich, recited at the banks of a river, is also compared to the coronation ceremonies, which were held near flowing waters, symbolizing the unending reign of the king.
Of course, Hashem is called King throughout the year. However, during this time of year, Hashem’s Kingship is at the center of our prayers. The Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 16a) teaches that Hashem says:
“On Rosh Hashanah, say Malchiyot [verses proclaiming Hashem’s Sovereignty] before Me . . . so that you may crown Me as King over you.”
We not only acknowledge Hashem as King; we make Him King!
Our Sages teach that Adam and Chavah were formed on Rosh Hashanah. The Midrash (Bereishit Rabbah 22, end) says that, thereupon, Adam composed Tehillim 92, which proclaims Hashem as King of the universe He created. Creation alone did not warrant this proclamation. It is only with the appearance of man, who has the free will either to accept Hashem or to rebel against Him, that Hashem could be called King. So, declaring Hashem’s Kingship is the truest expression of our uniqueness as human beings.

“Avinu Malkeinu” - “Our Father, Our King”
I’ve decided to speak on the topic of the “Avinu Malkeinu” (“Our Father, Our King) prayer. Can you tell me some things about it?
I’ll try to give you a few of the highlights of the Avinu Malkeinu prayer.
Avinu Malkeinu finds its origins in the Talmud (Taanis 25b): The Talmud relates that a famine hit hard, and as a result, the Sages proclaimed a fast day. During the fast day, Rabbi Akiva, one of the greatest Sages of Mishnaic times, recited five sentences, each one beginning with the words “Avinu Malkeinu,” “our Father, our King.” Immediately after his recitation of these five sentences, it began to rain.
Over the generations, different communities added to Rabbi Akiva’s original list of five, and eventually, it grew to the list of forty or so lines that we have today.
Aveinu Malkeinu is recited on fast days and during the 10 days of Repentence between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. However, it is not recited on Tisha B’av, even though it is a fast day. In addition, Avinu Malkeinu is never recited on Shabbat, except for one occasion: if Yom Kippur falls on Shabbat, Avinu Malkeinu is recited during the last prayer of the day, Neilah.
This should help you get started. I hope it goes well!
Be well,
Rabbi Yoel Spotts
May you and your loved ones be written and sealed in the book of life!

This coming Shabbat we (Ashkenazi) start to say Selichot prayers (prayers of penitance). Part of the Teshuvah process (repentence) involves us confessing our sins to Hashem through these meditations. By confronting our sins we are granted the ability to overcome them with the help of Hashem, so that we may serve him with all our efforts.

While I personally am an Ashkenazi Jew I have absolute respect and admiration of the Sephardic tradition. Their Selichot prayers are among the most moving.

Shalom, Shavuah Tov, & Shana Tovah!!!
I hope everyone had a pleasurable Shabbat experience today, I did...
I have only 2 more hours before I head back to my Rabbis Chabad house for midnight Selichot prayers. It is our custom to start the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.
It is funny that Acher Metzora just posted a video which appears to advise against saying Selichot (or at least asserting a fact which we already know, that Selichot are a minhag not a Biblical commandment).... That does not mean we should not say them, it is our custom.

I love the way Selichot have a way of penetrating the deeper parts of a Jewish soul. I cannot say how it sounds to a gentile, but for this Jew my heart beats with Jewish pride and Jewish blood, and I feel our history and know it will be good.

One of our minyan members wife just returned from Singapore where, we are told, a significant Jewish community exists. The Chabad center in Singapore apparently prays with a Sephardic minhag. As I stated above the Sephardic Selichot are some of the most moving melodies.

Im psyched we were able to get a minyan for Selichot in our community. This is the 1st year we have been able to do this in my county (otherwise we would have to travel farther away to join another community). I sure hope nobody flakes though...

Im sorry to those who are not so interested in Jewish music or Jewish inspiration, but I feel this music has the ability to touch the soul of a Jew and make it fly. The next parsha we read after the Holidays is Haazinu, a song composed by Moses, and many Torah ideas are expressed in the medium of songs (The song at the sea, the Song of Songs, Haazinu)...
During the High Holidays we say Aleinu with a special intensity... Normally we bow during a verse of the prayer, but on Yom Kippur we actually bow down on the ground (prostate ourselves, 'fall on our faces') at these verses.
Tomorrow night Saul Kaye will be playing at my local 'progressive' synagogue.
Please turn on Closed-Captioning for English subtitles (I painstakingly added them)...

The Rama (O.C. 621:4) writes that the custom is to fall on our faces when reciting the paragraphs in the repetition of the Yom Kippur Musaf that describe how those present in the courtyard of the Beit HaMikdash would prostrate themselves. The same custom applies when “Aleinu” is said. The Mishna Brurah (Sha’ar Hatziyun 131:44) writes that we have a similar custom for Aleinu on Rosh Hashana (although the Rama (131:8) seems to limit the custom to Yom Kippur).
While bowing, the Rama writes that a person must place a separation between his face and the ground. According to the pasuk in Vayikra (26:1) and the Gemara Megilla (22b), it is forbidden to bow down directly on a stone floor outside the Beit HaMikdash. However, having a separation (towel, cardboard, etc.) between the head and the floor removes the prohibition. Although a towel under the knees may protect one’s clothing, it is still necessary to have one by the head.
What is the halacha regarding floors that are not constructed of stone? The Mateh Ephrayim (621:14) writes that the custom is to have a separation with all floors. This stringency is based on the Rivash (# 412) who is concerned that under the present floor of the shul there may exist a stone floor, and the permanent structure of the building is not considered a separation (see Magen Avraham 131:22). Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach writes that although technically not a problem, the custom is to be stringent even with a floor that has permanently installed carpeting. (Ishei Yisrael chapter 45, note 210). (See, however, the Minhagei Chabad quoted after the Shulchan Aruch HaRav that the custom is not to require a separation on a wooden floor).
Does the custom of prostration apply to women? According to Rav Soloveichik, women in Lithuania did not bow on the floor, but those in Berlin did. What is the basis of the differing customs? In the Yom Kippur davening we say that the people who were in the courtyard of the Beit HaMikdash would prostrate themselves when they heard the Kohen Gadol pronounce Hashem’s name. Is the key factor being in the courtyard, where there were no women, or hearing the Kohen Gadol, which theoretically applied to everyone? (See Nefesh HaRav pp 214-215; Rivavot Ephrayim 3:421)
Two additional halachot:
The Mateh Ephrayim writes (592:1) that the congregation should not only bow, but also quietly recite Aleinu together with the Shliach Tsibur.
During the silent Amidah, one should bow slightly when reciting in Aleinu-Va’anachnu Kor’im. (See Ishei Yisrael, chapter 45 note 195)

The sounds of the Shofar should Inspire us all to look inside our psyches and step away from our egos. The commentators relate many reasons why the shofar sound has this effect on the soul.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuIe67u_ONw
"Even though the blowing of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah is a Biblical decree (lit., 'the decree of a verse'), there is a hint in it (meaning, a readily discernible reason behind it), as if to say: 'Wake up, wake up, [you] sleepers from your sleep, and awake [you] slumberers from your slumber. Search your deeds, repent, and remember your Creator.' Those [referred to] are they who forget the truth on account of the vanities of time, and who waste (lit., 'err with') their entire year with vainness and emptiness which neither help nor save. 'Look to your souls and mend your ways and your deeds, and let every one of you forsake his evil way and his improper thoughts.'

Sometimes it is possible to learn something and then realize that you already heard the concept elsewhere. For instance I just posted a video on Yom Kippur from aish.com and it discussed the idea of walking with G-d, as a father and a son walk together.
Now that I think about it I believe this is the idea which Matisyahu explored in his song 'We will Walk' in a way which is not evident on the surface, as I always believed it was a conversation between a man and a woman, but as we know the holy work of 'Song of Songs' compares our relationship with Hashem as a man/woman relationship.

One of the major themes of the High Holidays is the concept of Teshuvah which most consider to mean Repentance but rather it technically means to 'Return to the One or Oneself". Judaism posits that the human soul intrinsically desires to have a close relationship with his creator but due to our inclinations we stray from the path (which is one reason a form of sin is called 'Chet' meaning 'missing the mark')...
The Haftarah which is read on Yom Kippur afternoon is the portion of the prophet Yonah/Jonah. The reason, the sages explain, is that the overarching theme of Yonah is one of Teshuva, as Yonah is commanded by G-d to travel to Nineveh to prophesize to a non-Jewish nation (which actually will fight against Israel in the future) telling them to repent or be destroyed.
The people of Nineveh listened to Yonah and were spared the evil decree, much to the chagrin of Yonah who would rather have seen them destroyed...

If we take the second sentence to refer to immersion in a mikvah, the verb “yischatah” should not be translated as “purified,” but would be closely related to the word “chet.” A chet is a sin; its primary meaning though is related to the idea of missing the mark, to be off target and in error. (Every sin is an error.) By demanding a full mikvah of forty sa’ah, the pasuk would be turning these utensils into symbols of Man himself. Just as Man requires forty sa’ah, so do these utensils. A person who steps into a mikvah leaves behind some lesser part of himself. He rids himself of some level of unholiness, or pedestrian existence. The immersion of the metal utensil, apparently, does the same.

Topic: Evil, Is Man Intrinsically
Bryan at Columbia University writes:
Does the fact that we have a Yetzer Hara mean that Man is intrinsically evil?
Dear Bryan,
The Yetzer Hara is commonly translated as the "Evil inclination." Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (the Ramchal) in "The Way of G-d" describes the role of the Yetzer Hara in man's quest for perfection.
"Man is the creature created for the purpose of being drawn close to G-d. He is placed between perfection and deficiency, with the power to earn perfection. Man must earn this perfection, however, through his own free will...
Man's inclinations are therefore balanced between good [Yetzer Hatov] and evil [Yetzer Hara], and he is not compelled toward either of them. He has the power of choice and is able to choose either side knowingly and willingly..."
The Ramchal explains that this balance existed prior to the sin of Adam.
After his sin, however, he became more inclined to listen to the wiles of his Yetzer Hara. His job is now two-fold: First, he must even the balance between the spiritual and the physical. Then, he can work to perfect his soul until his spiritual so overwhelms the physical that the physical becomes elevated to its level of perfection.
The Yetzer Hara is an inclination to "stray," but Man has the wherewithal to overcome it. The pull of the Yetzer Hara is the more powerful of the two inclinations, but is by no means impossible to conquer.
The Torah states:
"G-d said to Cain, 'Why are you so furious? Why are you depressed? If you do good, will there not be special privilege? And if you do not do good, sin is crouching at the door. It lusts after you but you can dominate it.'"
And the Talmud tells us how:
"So said the Holy One, blessed be he, to Israel: 'My son I created the Yetzer Hara and I created for it the Torah as an antidote. If you toil in Torah you will not be handed over into his hands...'"

If one wants to be inspired to make holy music I think one should read the mitzvot before composing music for inspiration. Perhaps righteousness and good character will be reflected in the music instead of what we have today, which is music which generally corrupts the mind.

My point is, some of the catchiest music today and of the past 60 years is totally unkosher...basically satanic.
I think at the time of the Temple the music will be as enticing as the most catchiest of the century but totally kosher.
If you look at things like rap today, there is a reason why people like it... the beats...it is because there is rythm and bass...but the lyrical inspiration mostly comes from the sitra achra.
There is a reason why people like country music too...the twang of the guitar...
If you look at the great orchestras of Europe which 'cultured' people love so much (Bach, Bethoven etc...) you can see there is great orchestration and heavily nuanced music, but at the soul of it, it speaks of a different type of ideal or zeitgesit.
It is hard to explain...
But my theory is that when the Temple stands, the music will incorporate all the elements of what makes these varying types of music popular into one great symphony which will basically be irresistible...As irresistible as the odors of the incense etc...
That's how I picture it anyways...The soul of music went into exile when the Temple was destroyed.
In my opinion this is one of the challenges of the generation...bringing the soul of music back to Temple worship, or worship of God in a way that is undeniable. That means everything...rythm, strings, flutes, drums...it has to be superior to all other music...probably would be the most effective form of kiruv if it is done right.
