The socialists/communists do want producers to sell at a loss because they believe that it's unfair for anybody to have any more money than anyone else (except the ruling elite of course).

Don't fool yourself into thinking these pieces of [censored] care about fairness and equality, whether they're in Venezuela or the US. As long as they provide a majority of voters with free stuff that they can force a minority to produce or pay for, they will retain their political power and control over the peasants. That's what they really care about.
