Title: A Druze to command the Golani Brigade: a disgrace or a salvation?
Post by: Yerusha on October 24, 2013, 12:15:59 PM
Prof Eidelberg once seriously suggested that the only thing that would save Israel would be a non-Jewish prime minister!

And now, being unable to find any Jewish commander with the necessary verve to command the "elite" Golani Brigade, the IDF has been compelled to appoint a gentile!

This is a dismal reflection of the declining Zionism, intelligence and fighting spirit of the cadre of chilloni kibutz Sabra Jews in Zahal from which Golani leaders used to be chosen. Having a Golani commander with a knitted kippa would be a total taboo.

Druze are natural born killers and make good soldiers. But being mercenaries, their loyalty to the Jewish state is always in doubt ie for the right price, or if the Arabs got the upper hand in war, they would immediately become turncoats.

If you were a Jewish soldier under a Druze commander, who no matter how competent, knowing that it is likely to turn out in 2 years time that he has been passing info on to the Syrians as usually happens with Druze officers, how would you feel?

The saving grace is that Druze hate Hezbollah even more than Israelis do.

While this particular commander may be very loyal to the state, the fact remains that it is clearly against Halacha to appoint a non-Jew to such a high position in the Jewish military.
