Former Israeli PM Ehud Smolmert was convicted on coruption charges today.
He is going away for a few years to the pokey but have no fear just like Chaim Ramon & Aryeh Deri he will be back in the government or some kind political office in a few years after he gets out.

His political comeback has been postponed indefinitely.

So was Chaim Ramon's & Aryeh Deri's & they both came back to the Knesset after they finsished their prison sentences,so it only goes to reason that Smolmert will return as well.
In any normal country a convicted felon could never again run for office.
Welcome to Israel!!!!!

One thing he has against him is getting old, he is 69. His conviction is going to legally prevent him from holding public office for 10 years after his release from prison.

I think 7 years & both Deri & Ramon got back in after 7 years unless they changed the law 10.
But even after 7 he will be too old but who knows Peres keeps on running & he is much older than that.
I think Peres will keep on running for public office until he kicks the bucket/

I think you are right it's 7 years indeed. But still that comes after he is done serving his prison time. It's unlikely he will return to politics but not unthinkable either. After all he needs to "earn" back all the millions he has been spending on legal expenses.
