Police may press charges against Bar Ilan professor

Prof Hillel Weiss was heard cursing Hebron brigade commander, wishing him dead, following evacuation of Jewish settlers from two residences in city's marketplace

Efrat Weiss Published:  08.07.07, 18:58 / Israel News

The Judea and Samaria district police announced Tuesday it was considering investigating and possibly filing criminal charges against Hillel Weiss, a professor at Bar Ilan University Faculty of Jewish Studies

and Orot Israel College.

Weiss, who was protesing when IDF forces evicted settlers from two residences in the West Bank city of Hebron Tuesday morning, was heard cursing IDF Hebron brigade commander Colonel Yehuda Fox.

"May your mother be bereaved, your wife be widowed, your children be orphaned and may you be struck down in the next war and any memory of you be erased," Weiss said.

"The policemen are worse than the Germans. You don't expect anything from Germans, but the policemen here lost all trace of humanity and are capable of anything.

"What they're doing here will bring destruction upon the Jewish people, upon Israel, for generations to come," Weiss told Ynet.

Education Minister Yuli Tamir called on the police to launch an immediate investigation into the matter, saying "It was a despicable thing to say. He must be investigated."

"Professor Weiss' words stray far from our school's educational goals," said a statement by Orot Israel College.

"Comparing any Jew to a Nazi is appalling and cursing a military officer is unacceptable even if done in the heat of the moment. The college is completely and utterly against these sentiments," the statement continued.

Bar Ilan's spokesman, Shmuel Elgrabli, said the university "condemns these words, that should never have been said regardless of who said them… the university honors the law, respects IDF soldiers and is against any kind of incitement."

Weiss' opinions, stressed Elgrabli, are his own: "He spoke as a private citizen not as a professor at Bar Ilan... should the authorities find it necessary, I'm sure he would be dealt with according to the law."

That insult was unnecessarily harsh.  However, he shouldn't be charged with anything.
