Title: Question
Post by: Israel Chai on September 08, 2014, 04:47:43 PM
So I got money I have to give to tzedakah now, and I'm going crazy with figuring out who I owe more gratitude to. You guys got me out of being a leftist, a Rabbi helped me become shomer mitzvot, and there's a Lubavitch Rabbi who gave me a places to stay for shabbos and sent me to yeshiva, which made keeping mitzvot fun and not torture.

Idk what to do.

I give my tzedakah online... No cost for stamps...

You must personally decide which organizations to give to. I give to some political organizations, some which feed the hungry, some which support the IDF, some which support Torah scholars in Israel, and of course to Chabad and my local community.

Dude you named 3 organizations- that's 3 stamps!

About % depending on which organizations you feel is more effective and which needs it more, if all are even then its 33% , 33% , 33%.  If not then do your own Heshbon

The stamps are $1.20 each. I'm not a rich guy that can just throw stamps at whatever I want. I'll go with JTF this time, but I'm really worried about not being grateful, especially since Rabbi Mizrachi became such a great leader as of late...

Send it online... Costs virtually nothing.

Another thing you can do is find a rabbi you trust and ask him to send your tzedakah to organizations he trusts.

I would advise against this. Giving to a worthy cause that YOU believe in will feel great and fulfilling so why give that joy away?  Also who knows where that money would end up.   You already have ideas for worthwhile causes so you could split it up or go with your gut and give to Jtf which is probably most important cause out there.    If you can't afford stamps, then deduct the cost of the stamp from the amount you give in that envelope.   The 10% we give for tzedakka from income is after expenses and you cannot starve yourself in order to give tzedaka.

As for "being ungrateful" -no such thing.  You feel the desire to give and clearly are appreciative of what they've done for you, so you do have hakaras hatov.   You will be able to express it in a monetary way when the situation presents itself.  Do not fear.

The time presented itself. I still can't afford to give a penny, but wtv Hashem provided this, and can provide more. Now I have to know who I should monetarily express my gratitude to.

You had 3 ideas.   Give to all 3 and feel good about it.  Subtract the cost of the stamps.

I'm saying that when the situation presents itself you can give more.   My point is, even if you give to just 1 of these 3, there shouldn't be any feelings of guilt involved - you are doing a mitzvah.  Hashem will no doubt reward you.

But what is "wtv?"
If you truly cannot afford togive, you are not allowed to give.  There would be no reward in starving yourself in order to give tzedaka since that's not a mitzvah.   When you make statements like "I cannot afford to give a penny," what is your purpose in saying that?    We have no choice but to take it literally because we cannot read your mind.   If you cannot afford it you should not give.  Period.

I've donated the JTF a few weeks ago but i'am not realy happy with a few things such as my topic about Mesianic Jews was removed (i tried to learn something, ask for people's opinion but directly i was blaimed for all kind of things by paranoid people) and the Scottish independence campaign/video's where i just disagree with. I like to contribute or donate to any good organization but i will stop it soon as it's getting used for crap like the Scottish indepency (what will not work in the favour of the Jews anyway aldo it not will happen).

What was your purpose in writing this comment?  What did you hope to achieve?  (I will preemptively remind you, I am "just asking questions").

In addition, are you saying you no longer believe JTF is a good organization because it deleted one of your threads and supports Scottish independence?  Is your giving contingent on jtf agreeing with you on every issue?  If so, why?   These questions may be important to explore.

Give whatever percentage you want to give for each which make you happy.  If had $100 to give and let's say you give $33.33 to each organization, deduct $1.20 for the stamps for those organizations you are going to use postage stamps.

Yes it is a good organization. Like i said; I don't like it at all that people (include you) get hysterical over a topic i made about something i don't know to much about. Then i ask myself; Is it forbidden to do this? Apart from that i don't agree with the Scotish Independence campaign and i don't see reason why the JTF should support this. Yes indeed! I can not ask questions to explore myself, people get hysterical, blaming me for posting anti-Jewish propaganda and now this Scotish Independency nonsense... Some people are not afraid to speak out their minds when they don't agree. I can understand that you have some problems with that. Like i said: The JTF is a great organization but ofcourse i will think about it twice before i donate again if i am not alout to speak openly and apart from that i will not contribute to see Scotish Independecy video's. For the rest, i like to post here, share views and learn something from the good people on the forum.

You can speak your mind and people will disagree.  But when you speak your mind, even though it's on the internet, there could be consequences of what you say and how you say it.. whether it's on this forum or on Facebook.  So all KWRBT was saying is, "What are trying to gain with what you said? Is it necessary to say it?"

Ever heard of the concept mouth diarrhea? Unfortunately, many people have mouth diarrhea where they will just say anything only because it's on the internet. It's not a good thing.

Speaking out on a polite way is always a good thing. I do not offent people if they not offent me. I love 99% of the JTF video's, i like them and share them. If there will be one or two video's i disagree with i will say it. If i have the feeling that people smearing me because i am honest i will speak about it. Easy as it is.

Yeah they delete it when I talk about that stuff too. It's a line of argument that apparently has caused many problems, and is still on everyone's mind, so maybe they're right in nipping those early.

And I'll survive without that money, but it's not exactly comfortable for me.

It doesn't cost me or anyone to make a video.
And Chaims follow up video didn't cost anything either.
Why don't you make a video were you think Scotland should vote no?
