Why can't black people learn how to speak correctly, Erica? There are people in my law school who practically speak in ebonics and you can barely even tell what they're saying. Why can immigrants come to the U.S. and learn how to speak perfectly (like my Russian friend who moved here 10 years ago and speaks perfectly) but black people can't?

Second, I've gone through this question before and I was called stupid for bringing the answer to the forefront. Ebonics is similar to slave speak. You heard it in Negro Spirituals, and some speeches. You also heard it from Southern Whites of yester-year. When Africans were 'brought' to America, the ony languages they knew of was from their own land. It would have sounded like Ebonics to anyone who wasn't from where they came from.
WHen they learned to speak broken English to communicate with their masters, they developed a new way of speaking. It wasn't good because it wasn't proper English...it wasn't bad, either because at least they could communicate a little. As for why ebonics is spoken so much now in the black community, I don't know for sure. But I'll offer that the ancestors from the South had something to do with the dumbing down of black society where language is concerned.People were told they couldn't go to school, so they didn't. People were told that they couldn't read, so they didn't. The cycle continues today. I hope to rid our public schools of ebonics..I can start with my class though.

See here's an example of what I'm saying, this statement of yours shows how you believe we are looking at this issue. We don't say that the action of one person constitutes the action of an entire people. This is the frame of thinking that you use in your example. THe fact that you actually believe that we think that way is sort of ridiculous, I'm actually surprised at it. Let me make our position clearer, obviously you're making an example of us that is grossly exaggerated. We think that when we find many many many many examples of something, which is backed up with empirical evidence, we can legitimately claim that as an issue which has a pervasiveness that is unique in severity and degree to that community. This is how the entire world thinks of ideas and concepts and it is not a new concept to me and newman by any means.

Then why isn't black culture as a whole a problem? Isn't Ebonics just a part of that culture? Saying Ebonics is a problem without saying the cause of it is a problem is like saying terrorism is a problem without saying the ideology of Islam that's behind the terrorist is the cause of the problem.
Black culture AS A WHOLE is not a problem because not ALL of black culture is representative of a problem. I presented the cause of it, and gave you what I knew of it and what I was taught about it. That didn't answer your question?

Why can't black people learn how to speak correctly, Erica? There are people in my law school who practically speak in ebonics and you can barely even tell what they're saying. Why can immigrants come to the U.S. and learn how to speak perfectly (like my Russian friend who moved here 10 years ago and speaks perfectly) but black people can't?

Second, I've gone through this question before and I was called stupid for bringing the answer to the forefront. Ebonics is similar to slave speak. You heard it in Negro Spirituals, and some speeches. You also heard it from Southern Whites of yester-year. When Africans were 'brought' to America, the ony languages they knew of was from their own land. It would have sounded like Ebonics to anyone who wasn't from where they came from.
WHen they learned to speak broken English to communicate with their masters, they developed a new way of speaking. It wasn't good because it wasn't proper English...it wasn't bad, either because at least they could communicate a little. The thing is, bullcat. I don't want people here associating with me here thinking that its okay to speak to me in ebonics just because I'm black. I showed enough respect to you not to come in here like that; representing that 'evil black' culture you all hate..so I didn't. It wasn't too much to ask. I've been here on and off (mostly on) since April 23rd. I've never had to use ebonics. But the whitest white people here thinks its okay to bash blacks by speaking it (even on a normal basis).. You know... I just told you that you were right, then you give me attitude? I could tell YOU to get over the fact that blacks are here to stay. But that's something you'll NEVER get over. Its never fair to be singled out because of what most of your race does. It isn't fair at all and I have a right to what I feel.
I remember one evening I was in the store with two of my children and a white woman approached me asking me about my daughters' hair. She apparently liked how "we people" did our daughters' hair..then asked me, "So are you with the father?" My first thought was to roll my eyes and walk away but I told her that (at the time) I was married for 9 years to their father. She said..."Oh, I see...Well, is he in the picture..." It took that one white female person to look at me and peg me for a single black mom, whose husband was in jail- and that wasn't the case at all. That made me very uncomfortable because if this was the way one white woman saw black women just shopping with their children, how did the rest of the whites view us? SOmetimes assumptions hurt like hell, especially when you don't deserve it.

I didn't equate that lady to you at all. I was making a point that people make the wrong assumptions sometimes and it greatly affects what the NEXT person will say about you (well, how you take what they'll say about you.) I don't make it my business to watch white people's response to my appearance but when it happens that I meet a 'nice white person' but don't expect them to act like the lady; but THEN they do, I feel cheated.
As far as get over it, could I say the same thing for you? No, because the statistics say that more blacks commit crimes than other races. So no matter how many mean, angry and bigoted white people I meet, in your eyes, I should just get over what they say or do because 'fewer are like them'.

I don't find the question silly, but I do find you quite silly. Answer the question. Whenever I or even Daniel came in here talking about how important it is to educate black youth...instead of saying...WOw, at least someone wants to deal with them... you say things like "They're nothing, they'll be criminals".
THEN when I posted those great things about black culture, you and others shot them down and then asked me to list things that blacks invented. Inventing something isn't intrincially black or white. Once again, this post demonstrates the height of arrogance. "They want to do this" and "this is what they want" like you know us and all of our motivations for what we do. I don't hate Erica and I don't want to make her into a victim, I think she certainly is a respectable woman and we disagree on a few major points. It's a typical technique of people who hold a liberal mentality to take honest and open feelings and topics of conversation and attempt to turn them into something ugly in order to undercut that person. What you do is unjustifiably and without evidence, slander the person who holds the arguments and try to create ulterior motives in their motivation for discussion rather than confronting the issue at hand.

I wasn't driving, my husband was...and we were cruising a couple of points above the speed limit. He pulled up next to my side of the vehicle to 'express himself'. And I'm sure he said what he said because I'm black. OTHERWISE HE WOULDN'T HAVE MOUTHED "BLack B&^!#" flipped me the middle finger. You explain that. We'd done nothing wrong to him. My husband is an excellent driver.
