Title: The Army Times: Ron Paul 'Surprise Fave Among Troops'

WHAT'S UP: Among Republicans running for president, the anti-war candidate — Texas Rep. Ron Paul — has the highest total of campaign contributionns from service members, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission reports. Paul collected $14,840 from service members, slightly more than the $14,775 collected by Arizona Sen. John McCain, a supporter of the war in Iraq. The other Republican candidates got $2,600 or less from contributors who identified themselves as service members.

WHAT'S NEXT: Paul, who served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force in the 1960s, and McCain, a Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, could not be further apart in their views of the Iraq war, which is the biggest military issue so far in the 2008 campaign that is just beginning. The current front-runner in the race, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, received $2,550 from military contributors, the FEC report shows.

Post by: EagleEye on September 17, 2007, 02:46:49 PM: 14,000 is nothing in a political campaign...Paul won't win, in fact, I'll be surprised if he even finishes in the top 5 for overall votes when it actually counts.

Post by: drucilla on September 17, 2007, 03:00:12 PM: No, it is not a lot, but the point you are missing just as was missed elsewhere, is that, with the exception of John McCain he got more than quite a few of the other pro war "support the troops" candidates(2,600 or less) combined.
What does it tell you when even U.S. troops are willing to give more monetary support to the only anti war candidate among the GOP?

not a lot of money, but still about 5 times more than candidates like Gulianani.

It is not terribly surprising to think that a decent amount of troops want to get out of this mess. Certainly the ones with half a brain are well aware by now that they were completely manipulated.
