In these hard economic times if I were the heads of the reform & grossly misnamed "conservative" movements first thing I would do would be to abolish the position of rabbi.
A cantor can perform all the same life cycle functions & it is not like they need a rabbi to pasken shealos or certify something kosher because they are just going to do what they want anyway.!!!
So just cut costs & let the cantor do it all as he or she as the case may be is more important in the heterodox movements than the rabbi anyway!!!
So just combine the 2 titles & save money!!!!!

Because the whole point is to make it look Jewish so everyone feels less bad that they do nothing Hashem wants there.

They can still do that if they abolish the position of rabbi & let the cantor serve both functions.
It fiscally makes more sense!!!
