Hi bullcat jr., Whats it like living in Shangri-La do you live on one of the high mountains in the picture ;D. One of our presidents use to visit a place called Shangri-La  during his time off do you know which one?

I do live on kind of a high mountain.  ;)
I have an Uncle who is really smart.  He tells me about history all the time.
That president was FDR.  My Mom helped me find this picture.
Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill in Shangri La (May 14, 1943).

Well I have to say bullcat jr. you and your mom are good researchers. I have quite a few books on FDR and Churchill and I don't think I ever saw that picture before. Thanks for finding it. FDR had another place he use to spend time at called the Little White House do you know where that is?

I visited that little house some years ago and it still has all FDR's stuff in it almost as he left it the day he died there. Its a great place to visit and they have quite a bit to see there in addition to that nice little house. Not many folks know this but beside this little house FDR had another small house he used as a retreat called Top Cottage see if you can find out where that one is.

My Mom and Dad went to Top Cottage in Hyde Park, NY before I was born.
I never knew that!   ;)
FDR is holding his dog Fala in the picture.  I just got a new puppy.
Well I'm going to school in a few minutes.  Have a good day.

I think I made an error this morning when I told BullCat Jr. that we  visited Top Cottage.  What we actually visited was Van-Kill.  Eleanor and her Lady Friends ;) retreat.

New puppies are a lot of fun!! You and your mom found a great picture of FDR one of the few that show the fact that he was unable to walk. That picture was taken on the front porch of Top Cottage by Margaret (Daisey) Suckley FDR's cousin . She use to pal around with him all the time and was actually with him when he died at The Little White House in Warm Springs Ga. You can visit Daisey's home Wilderstein  in Rinebeck N.Y. its a great old house thats exactly how she left it when she died at the age of about 100. I was able to visit Wilderstein soon after it was open to the public and it needed a lot of restoration. Its good to see they are getting it done.
http://www.wilderstein.org/about.html
I have seen the other two Roosevelt homes Springwood and Van Kill. Springwood was the Roosevelt family home and Van Kill was a house FDR built for his wife Elenore Roosevelt.

http://www.fdrlibrary.marist.edu/frdcsb4.html
You should get your mom and dad to take you to see all four homes you will have a great time. There are also some other big houses there where other very rich folks lived and you can visit them also. I have have not seen  Top Cottage yet I will have to visit there the  next time I go up to Hyde Park N.Y. It was not open to the public yet the last time I was up in that neighborhood. There is also one other Roosevelt home where FDR liked to vacation. It was there that he became sick and became unable to walk. See if you can come up with the name of that home.

Yes Top Cottage has only been open to the public for a short time. Van Kill is also a interesting home and the history of Eleanor and her friends there is quite a tale :o In some of his braver moments FDR would go over and swim  with the sharks (Eleanor's so called lady friends) in the Van Kill pool. It seems Eleanor's friends were key players in the woman's movement and civil rights activities of the day. One of Eleanor's closest friends was Lorena Hickok a journalist.

Sorry, but may I ask what was so good about FDR?  I can name many things he did that distroyed the fiber of America not to mention placed millions of people under Communism at the sell out at Yalta.  FDR with his ultra-Liberal wife who followed the same New Age and Theosophy crap as Alice Bailey and Helena Blavatsky, were no damn good.

While Jews were cooking in the ovens of Auschwitz FDR's Allied forces bombed everthing but the railways and key foreign owned German corporations.

If anyone is interested there are very good books on FDR and America's/West's funding/aiding Nazism, Communsim and of course the elitists today doing the same thing with the same peoples/nations adding to it the Muslims...

Shangri-La, I don't know if you are Jewish or Christian but there is one book on that page that may very much interest you called "The Rainbow Swastika" by Hannah Newman.   ;)

MarZutra I never said that FDR was a great president but he did do America some good if only to get people out of the stagnation of a world wide depression. If only by talking to them he got folks moving again which was just what was needed. This thread was started by an 8 year old child that has no idea who FDR was before I started playing this little game of having the parent and the child look up the things you saw in this thread. Shangri-La is a mythical place and it was I that linked it to FDR and Camp David. The posts progressed from there. FDR is a interesting president for people who live in New York because his primary home is the presidential library and his other homes are all open to the public to visit.
For all his sins I like FDR and I honestly believe that with all that was going on with the war he was either not informed or he personally was unable to do more to stop the slaughter of Jews in the German camps. If I am not mistaken FDR had an opposition congress and it was not always easy for him to get things he wanted done. It was very sad the way Jews were turned away that were seeking asylum here however I again believe he did not have to power or political clout to open the doors to what could have been a sizable Jewish immigration. Times were still hard in America then and the last thing Americans wanted were more mouths to feed even if only temporally.  His Liberal programs were not all that liberal and most were intended to sunset at some point when times got better. Social Security as we know it now was never part of FDR's original plan. SSI was only intended to keep people from starving it was not intended to be a retirement system. By his 4 term FDR was so sick he did not want to run again but bowed to party pressure. What happened at Yalta was really not entirely his fault it would have required possibly taking on the Russians then and there to make them back down and from the way my father puts it ( a WW2 vet ) nobody was in the mood to fight any longer. From the Jewish prospective looking back FDR was not a good president. From any other he was really no worse than any of the others that came before or after him.

Yes he had some nice places to live but we left one  home out. While not as nice as the others homes back then today it would be a very trendy address to have. Now for the final question on FDR what was the address of his townhouse in Manhattan. Hint..... His mom had an identical town house right next door to his and it was said that the two houses were connected from inside so they could visit whenever they liked.

Boy that was quick. Its a nice house to visit and I am glad to hear that you were there. Ike use to love to play golf. He had a course set up behind his home and if you look in the photo you posted you will see it in the picture. Ike was the  president when I was born and he was also the first president that I remember. I have also visited Ike's house twice. The first time was many years ago around 1989. On that visit an interesting old man who was Mamie Eisenhower's doctor before she died gave the tour. He had visited the home many time's when Ike and Mamie were alive and had many stories to tell. After the tour was over and the group dispersed he talked with me about Ike and Mamie for quite a while. Ike's home was actually a working farm and he ran it after he left the White House. The nice thing about Ike's home is that it is built along the edge of Civil War battle field and there are miles of open space around it. If anyone visits Gettysburg Pa this place is a must see. Down the road is General Lee's Headquarters and restaurant and just up the street is the Gettysburg historical center with hours of things to see.
Who was Ike's vice president?

Funny you should say Ike's house was a working farm.
BullCat Jr. remembered seeing a tractor.  She has an excellent memory for small details.
You're right - it was a great place to visit.
Very interesting and it was impressive being right in the middle of all those Civil War Battle Fields.

Yes Nixon is the right answer! You guys are very good. Now for a harder question. Nixon would spend his time off in a place called the "western white house" See if you can find out where that was.  Hint...Its a two word name and the first letters in the name of the place is S.C.  So Bill Clinton was president when you were born ;D I like my president better( Ike ) He was also a great Army General.

Sorry to hear that about Clinton...  He was such a deprave animal.  I tend to prefer people like Joseph McCarthy, General Douglas MacArthur or the 1964 Barry Goldwater in all honesty.  There hasn't been any real "activist" or righteous politicians since.  All of these were like the Michael Savages of Politics...  :)

I can remember the Nixon days myself......  Archie Bunker was right... ;)

He had a dog named Checkers before he was vice president. It seem he was in trouble over some donation money and a story about how he got the dog saved the day. You are right about San Clemente here is a web site with some great pictures of Nixon's home.

Search as we might we couldn't find any pictures of the outside of Nixon's home in San Clemente.  Thanks for sharing that link!

Nixon had a few other dogs along with King Timahoe during his time in the White House he had a Vicky the poodle  and Pasha the terrier.

I am not 100% sure but I think the fellow in the far right corner of the picture with the blue shirt and tie is the grandson of a very popular prior president who could he be? Hint!! I think along with being president he was very well known during World War 2.

Re:  "...He always seemed nice and genuine.[Nixon]..."

Huh?

One thing that has never ceased to amaze me, is that every single person from within various levels of the U.S. government who knew Nixon, all claim still to this day that he was the most intelligent person whom they had ever met in their entire lives!

My favorite story about "Tricky Dick" is the one where Elvis sought an audience with him, and was ushered into the Oval Office, where he greeted Nixon warmly, and asked him to appoint him to the Drug Enforcement Administration so that he could help get American kids off of drugs.  The two men then posed for publicity photos...Elvis wearing one of his outfits with a huge jeweled belt buckle and a long purple cape.

Shortly after Elvis "left the building", Nixon is said to have turned to one of his aides, and with dumbfounded seriousness, asked "Who the hell was that guy??!?"

Great work and you 100% correct about FDR having 3 vp's I completely forgot about Garner. I am very embarrassed over that because I had completely disregarded him :-[. I have read many books on FDR and I am amazed on how that fact just slipped my mind. I guess old Harry Truman was about the most well known of FDR's vp's because he went on to be president. During his time in the White House Harry Truman's daughters piano almost fell through the floor of the White House. It seems that the old place had become decrepit. During Truman's presidency the entire interior of the White House was gutted out and rebuilt inside the original walls using a steel structure. They tried to reuse  as much of the original fixtures as possible to make it look as it did before the rebuild. Three questions. What was Truman's daughters first name? Hint, she writes great spy and mystery novels. Where did the Truman family reside during the renovation? And what very visible change did old Harry make to the outside of the White House?

Well you got it right. Do you know he is the person that Camp David is named after? His grandfather President Eisenhower renamed the place FDR called Shangri-La after him during his time in office and the name  seems to have stuck. Here is a great site showing Camp David ( Shangri-La ) It's to bad that this great spot with so much history had to be desecrated by Jimmy Carter and his Camp David Peace accords.

Many things can be said about Nixon however his path to the White House was not a gift he had to use his own resources to get there. Most presidents have great party support something Nixon did not enjoy. Say what you want but Nixon was a sharp politician. The thing that bought him down is that he let his insecurities get the best of him. When Ike had his hart attack Nixon carried the ball faultlessly for the time Ike was laid up. He would have been president if Joe Kennedy didn't buy the election for his son JFK during the 1960 elections. In his own term as president he had some very good things happen with Russia , China and won his second term in a landslide victory. His second term victory was in the bag. Why he and the people around him felt they needed to do the activities that lead up to Watergate in spite of the fact his poll numbers were high is unclear to me.  He resented being talked down to by the Ivy Leaguers and he always thought that they were trying to make him look foolish in order to do him in. In the end he did himself in trying to outsmart them. He let the black hole of Watergate swallow him up.The case study of Nixon's political life has to be done in parts to really tell whats there. If Nixon would have destroyed the White House tapes at the very start of the scandal the Watergate story would have ended before it even started and he may have gone down in the history books as a good or even great president.

You guys are very good. Margaret Truman is the correct answer. So is Blair house. President Truman had a hard time convincing congress to let him add the Truman balcony to the White House. In the end he got his way and it looks like it has always been there. They say its impossible for the president to use it because he would be in danger sitting out there. When President Truman was staying at Blair house some bad men came to hurt him and his family. The secret service were able to stop them. Its to bad you were unable to tour the White House. When I was a kid not much older that you are I went on a school trip to Washington. We stayed at the Hotel Harrington in Washington DC. I also was unable to tour the White House on that trip because President Truman had died and they were using the White House for the ceremonies. I have been to Washington many times since then and have toured the White House 3 times. Its a great feeling to walk through the rooms filled with all that history. There is a great virtual tour on the web and its almost feels like your walking through the rooms. Hopefully one day the White House Tours will be opened again.

Yes I can thats Sagamore Hill the home of Teddy Roosevelt. I have been there many times. Its in Oyster Bay long Island. Did you also go to Old Orchard his sons house  TR junior? Sagamore Hill has lots of great stuff in it and yes many many animals that TR hunted. Any one that lives in N.y should go see this great place. The answer to your question last week. Who was the father of the Fox hounds here in America is none other than George Washington. I seems he was the first one to bring them into America

George Washington, the father of our nation, is also the father of American Foxhounds. In 1770, Washington imported a number of hounds from England and in 1785, he received a number of French foxhounds from the Marquis de Lafayette. These hounds, carefully bred and maintained by Washington, are the founders of today's American Foxhound. More than 30 hounds were listed in Washington's journals, including "Drunkard," "Tipler," and "Tipsy."

What was George Washington's home Called?

Wow look at TR sitting on top of that Cape Buffalo. He looks much better on TR's wall over the fireplace in the front hall then he does in that picture here. I don't really know which one of the animals bothered you the most The house is filled with so many heads and huge animal rugs every room in the house. As I remember he even had a moose head in his dinning room. My favorite room is the large den he has at the rear of the house I could spend weeks looking at all the great stuff in there.
Your correct about Washington's home being called Mount Vernon. I have been there a few times and its a great place to visit. Is just outside of Washington DC. Be sure to leave plenty of time when you go because there is a lot to see.

Yes Douglas MacArthur had a fabulous life.  It was tragic how, being totally right, he was undermined by those corrupt elitists/globalists around him thus making him retire.  Funny, how is retirement parade was one of the biggest celebrations for any American official signifying that most thought he was correct in his views.

Sadly, history seems to dictate that the 1964's "Extremism in the defense of Liberty has no vice": Barry Goldwater and "McCarthyisms": Joseph McCarthy were too largely correct.  Being outside the fould of central power: CFR/Rockefeller Eastarn Establishment......they were undermined and distroyed.

All three men are highly comparable to Rabbi Kahane's confrontation with the "Jewish" Bolshevik and Diasproa "Jewish" Mainstream Establishments...

If you like to read, I'd recommend Barry Goldwater's "With No Apologies" and "Joseph McCarthy: Reexamining the Life and Legacy of America's Most Hated Senator" by Arthur Herman

I learned alot about Mac Arthur helping BullCat Jr. to look him up.
I will also make a list of the books you suggest - so I can check them out of the library.  Thanks Again.

This thread has been great for the both of us - especially it has fueled BullCat Jr.'s interest in history and in the great country she lives in.
She is also learning of all the sacrifice it took to make this such a great country. She is learning to value and defend her way of life, even at this young age, from all you very passionate and intelligent people.

She is also learning about Israel, her people and their daily struggle for survival.

Your very right about MacArthur he was indeed a great general and many people loved him. I was really made aware of this some years ago while traveling through Virgina and I stumbled onto his burial site. It is an enormous building much like Grants Tomb but only more elaborate. On the main level they have the crypt for his wife his son and himself and on the second level they have a museum with all his stuff medals, uniforms, personal belongings  everything very detailed. In the back of the building they have an annex used as a gift shop and in there they even have his car from the Philippians. Its to bad its in a rough neighborhood because its a great stop for people who are interested in military history to see.

Yup, MacArthur, McCarthy and the younger Goldwater (before the turned into a Libertarian) were the great voices of America.  I think it is sad that anyone, including Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo etc. who out of the "fould of Establishment power", really have no chance of being elected and therefore America's path will not change unless either at the State level they break out of the union (constitutional republic) or a civil war...imo.  The Establishment will not let them run unless they bend and hop on board of their Globalism bandwagon.  "To get along...go along" mentality is ever apparent.  Heck, this is what happened to Ronald Regan for example; the man who "defeated" communism.... ???  Look at Fred Thompson, for example, is a Trilateralist...

American political realities since the days of Woodrow Wilson and his shadow, or alter ego; Col M. House have been continually turning away from the Constitution towards the Socialist Welfare State being sold to the public as a "democracy"...which it is not.

Bullcat you will enjoy these books by Antony Sutton and too, being a mother, the one about American academia.  All of these books, even though of different topics, all are connected in some sort of way, even the Kahane books...  http://www.somebodyhelpme.info/ebooks/ebooks.html  Too if you get an opportunity John T. Gatto's "The Underground History of American Education:
VIDEO INTERVIEW: http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=5968885033799420604
E-BOOK: http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/chapters/index.htm

You will see that after skimming these pages on political realities and the "Deliberate Dumbing Down of America"...the bankruptcy of every aspect of the West all fits into this continual Leftwing drift into International Socialism...or Globalism.

If you are a reader who likes the very detailed works on philosophy/history you will enjoy Oswald Spenglers 1936 work "The Decline of the West"....   O0

My Mom saw this boat in New York City.
She was able to go on it!
She said it was beautiful.  Even if it wasn't fixed up yet.
She helped me find this

The Sequoia is a meticulously restored, 104-foot, 1925 Trumpy-designed yacht that has served Presidents since Herbert Hoover.

The yacht is a national historic landmark and is available for exclusive charters in Washington.

You are most welcome Bullcat3.  I am glad that you allow your daughter to come on here and discuss various topics openly.  I know some things seem "extreme" today but when one looks at the filth, corruption, deprevity and absolute debasement that are held up as today's role models: Yasir Arafat, Bill/Hillary Clinton, Ghorge Wetback Bush, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and all those filthy Rap/Hip-Hop and to some extent the professional atheletes one must feel that "extremism" seems to only be acceptable when it is against what is both logical and moral.  If you should need anything or wish to pose questions or chat please feel free to pm me...  Very best regards and wishes.... :)

See if you can come up with its name. Here is a hint. Its named after a very large tree.
This one was easy  :)

The yacht is a national historic landmark and is available for exclusive charters in Washington.

http://www.sequoiayacht.com/
Here I thought I had a tough question and it turns out to be an easy one. I saw the Sequoia also but did not get to go on board. It was out here on Long Island  some time ago for a few weeks in a place called Port Jefferson. I got to see it up close and even got to look in the windows but did not go inside. It was a very nice yacht to see. You said your mom got to go on board see the inside that must have been a great feeling to be where all the presidents and famous people once were. Its to bad that Jimmy Carter had to be such a tightwad and sell this wonderful piece of history. It's great that the people who own it now take such good care of it and still have it open for tours.

Thank You MarZutra.  I do love to read.  These topics are especially of interest to me now!  I worry every day about the world my child will live and lives in.  The education system...what is there to say?  It is all upside down.
Thanks again for the suggested reading...it is always appreciated...knowledge is power as they say!
BullCat Jr. has had fun and learned alot from reading and  posting on this thread - Thanks for mentioning some of your favorite people in history  O0
How very true.  A few weeks ago I was having a conversation with a neighbor and it came out that she was a distant relative of Betsy Ross.  I asked her 9 year old daughter if she knew that she was related to Betsy Ross and, to my surprise, she didn't know who I was talking about.  After a few seconds of struggling to remember she came up with "oh, was that the woman on the bus?".   I imagine she meant Rosa Parks.  This is the state of our education system.  By the way, she never was able to figure out who Betsy Ross was.

That story really hits the nail on the head in regards to the state of our education system.
It is very frustrating.  They learn more about people in black history  :o
then American History in general.
What my daughter learned about Christopher Columbus is that he was bad to the poor Indians.  Period!  With no historical perspective.
Yet - they spend many days discussing the great and honorable MLK - every year.

That is why we are enjoying all the research we have done for this thread.
I think tonight we will look up Betsy Ross together - Thank You for the suggestion.

We learned alot about our beautiful flag in researching Betsy Ross last night.
You are right HiWarp - Children are not being taught about her - and I assumed they were.
My family attends every Veteran/patriotic event held in our community.  Often my child is the only child in attendance.  We discuss our freedoms - how they are maintained - symbols of it etc.  all the time...and yet my daughter did not know who Betsy Ross was.
I know there is some question to the validity of her story...but I think teaching about her is an excellent way to teach about that one great symbol - our beautiful American Flag -- and that period in our history.
We also learned how to cut a 5 pointed star in one snip.

Thanks for the links bullcat.  Reading them takes me back to my days in grade school.  It's a shame that "educators" today, and I use the term very loosely, consider Afro-American history to be more relevant than this and other aspects of American history.

Hi bullcat jr. I have been trying to find the answer to the question you left me but with all the books I have here on the presidents I must say I could not find a thing on it. You have me stumped. I will take a guess and say it was T.R only because he and his family was known to have several white house pets.

Hi bullcat jr I been busy at work the past few days and haven't had time to research your question about Primo Levi when I got home. Its contract negotiation time and its my job to see that my people get a fair shake from the company. Its a tough job because all the companies today want cheap labor and the poor American workers are being taken to the cleaners :'(. You need to study hard in school and become a labor lawyer so one day you can help people get a fair days pay for a good days work :) .
I have been looking up your Primo Levi and I have to say he is a interesting guy ;). He had two great things going for him he was Italian and he was Jewish O0. It seems like many Jews he was a smart guy. He was a chemist and in later life he also became a writer. His writings were about his time as a consentration camp survivor. His writings seem to consist about his time in the Auschwitz consentration camp. Writings like this are important because it documents the great suffering that Jews were subjected to during this evil time. Your question has spurred my interest to find one of his books and do some further research about this man. I would also like to add his book to my collection.

I told her your answer.
I love people who can do a great imitation of Edward G. Robinson.
He was a great character.

Do you know Rachael Ray?  She cooks on TV.  She reminds me of The Frog from Courageous Cat.  The way she looks and talks.

So I was trying to show BullCat Jr. the cartoon.  That is how we came across Edward G Robinson's Bio.

BullCat jr. was thrilled that you wanted to answer the question.
Thank You.

Maybe CJD can tell us where Edward G. Robinson was born and where he is buried...or you if you know.
Thanks again!

That was a great answer OdKahaneChai. That was a interesting question bullcat jr. You both surprised me. I thought only old dogs like me remembered Courageous Cat ;D. I loved it as a kid. Edward G. Robinson was one of my most favorite actors he was great. He was born on December 12,1893. I just learned that we both share the same birthday except he would be slightly older than I am if he were still alive. He was born in Bucharest. He died on January 26,1973. He is buried in Beth-El Cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens, New York. I may try to visit the spot one day now that I see its N.Y.C

CJD gave the right answer - as you know  ;)  He was burried in Ridgewood, Queens, NY

By doing this we are learning so many great things.
I'm going to do a little more reading on Edward G. Robinson.

Was there a cartoon character in the Bugs Bunny Cartoons based on him too?
I seem to remember one in the back of my mind.

Right in the Wikipedia article!

Rocky and Mugsy.

Rocky based on Edward G. Robinson and the other character based on Peter Lorre.
Peter Lorre was also born into a Jewish family.
I think he was a great character actor.  I loved watching him in movies when I was a little girl.
It is so hard to find those movies played on TV today - but they were on all the time when I was small.

Mugsy based on Peter Lorre is a bit of a stretch, I think.  Now the mad scientist in "Hair-Raising Rabbit"...

In the 50s and 60s adults would see those cartoons and recognise the charicatures of actors or other personalities.

It was the opposite for me. I grew up watching those cartoons and when I got older I started watching old movies.

I'd see Edward G Robinson and say..."That's the Frog!" or James Cagney and say."That's Jerry Mouse's tough cousin Max". :::D

Well its true I am an old bird BullcatJr. I was born when Eisenhower was president and thats a very long time ago. I have never really watched the Jakers cartoon but I have seen parts of it. I think Wiley the sheep's voice is that of Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks grew up a poor kid and became a very famous actor with loads of money. He was talking about his childhood on the radio the other day and it was unbelievable how poor he started out. I have to try and watch a few episodes of that cartoon it looks really interesting.
