Every year I avoid public transportation here in Israel from Rosh Chodesh Av until 10 Av because the stench of B.O. at times gets so bad it is unbearable.
Some fanatics don't shower during this time other than erev Shabbos if at all until after noon on 10 Av.
Both Rav Ovadia & Rav Moshe Moshe paskened you can & should not only for hygenic reasons but also it is a Chilul Hashem to stink!!!
I myself asked Rav Sholom Marozov one of the mashpiim in Chabad & he said if you can't live with yourself go for it & it is no mitzvah to stink.

It is permitted for hygienic reasons but not for pleasure.

I said that already but some take it to an extreme & don't bathe at all.
Showering for hygiene is allowed but something like swimming in a pool or going to the beach not.

Basic hygiene would require just about every day for most people in today's world.

Indeed & that is why it is a Chilul Hashem for these Meah Shearim & Geula dudes to not bathe & go around smelling worse than dirty diapers!!!

That reminds me of when an affirmative action homeless schvartza lays down on a bench and he smells like he didn't clean himself properly after going to the bathroom. Sometimes people also smell that way in synagogue on Shabbat but not as bad.
