If one ever bites or scratches you though, it'll be a painful and expensive trip to the doctor for rabies shots though!

Yes, I have seen a skunk out in the country (upstate NY).  The raccoon was in the city though.  In fact it was climbing the fence across the street from my apartment and then got startled and ran underneath my car before running across the street.
