I think Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul started using the term because they wanted to distinguish themselves from Republicans who supported the Iraq War. 

The term means "globalist."  It's misleading because since it contains the term conservative, people assume that there are liberal globalists.  The Clintons are globalists.  Jimmy Carter is a globalist.

What "neo-conservative" really means is someone like Ronald Reagan who switched from being a Democrat to a Republican. 

Most globalists who claim to be conservative aren't "neo-conservatives" because they never were liberals.  The percentage of globalists are probably split between liberals and republicans.  For example, supporters of trade agreements like NAFTA are globalists.  When the bill was passed in congress more than a decade ago, it was probably split between the number of Democrats and Republicans who supported it.

Neocon is probably an abbreviation that people made for "neoconservative".   I think "con" is thought of as sort of an abbreviation for "convict",  so when people refer to someone as a "neocon", I think they're trying to imply that they're criminals. 


Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan call themselves "paleoconservatives" or maybe for Ron Paul, a paleoliberal. 


Ron Paul voted in favor of making Ramadan a national holiday.  He also intentionally downplays Iran's intentions and neglects the fact that Iran also wants to harm the US. 

Many of his supporters consider "9/11" to have been an inside job.

Many of the people at the last debate booed Ron Paul at least several times.

They are far removed from any semblance of "conservatism"...closer to Fascism with a heavy dose of Clintonian Socialism.

Their foreign as well as domestic policies are a mirror image of the former Soviet Union from the 1970's....almost every idea they've had or any policy they've supported was something which existed under Brezhnev or Kosygin.
