CANTON, Ohio - A jury in Ohio has spared a former police officer convicted of killing his pregnant girlfriend and their unborn daughter from the death penalty.

Jurors recommended a sentence of life in prison with the chance of parole after 30 years for Bobby Cutts Jr. A judge will decide on a sentence later Wednesday.

Cutts tearfully testified during his trial that he accidentally killed 26-year-old Jessie Davis with an elbow to the throat during an argument last June, then panicked. Prosecutors said he wanted to avoid child support payments for another child.

He could have faced the death penalty for his conviction on a charge of aggravated murder in the death of the fetus.

There's a history in this country of fatherly protection of daughters. In the past the father of the woman was asked for his blessing for a couple to get married. The mother was also consulted by the father for the mother's wise opinion as well. If the father said no, then there was no marriage, unless the couple decided to be rebellious, and this was usually (despite romantic novels and comedies) a very bad idea. As mature adults who had seen more of the world, the woman's parents were wiser than she most of the time and not being in love with the suitor himself, the father had less clouded judgement and could more fairly assess the prospect.

This is one layer of protection that has almost completely been stripped away and it leaves young women who fall in love vulnerable to charismatic monsters.

Another layer of protection that has been stripped away is that whites in general and women in particular are taught from young childhood that it's "EVIL" and "RACIST" and other buzzwords to resist relationships with those of other races. In the past most young white women simply would have been raised to know better than to go with a black man. Now they fear being called racist if they resist a black man's advances.

This is a very twisted and sick world that leaves women vulnerable to predators like this.

He should have been sentenced to die just like Jesse and his child did. The thing is  that Jesse's mother pleaded that the jury and judge spare his life. Cutts and Jessie had a son together who is 2 years old. He also witnessed the murder. He was ALSo a key witness in the court case because he was the only witness. So basically, he turned in his father for what he did to his mother.... That little boy has a lot to live for now but he also has some hurdles to jump over. I hope he gets therapy for the trauma he's no doubt going through.

It would actually be cheaper for them to hire someone to knock him off in the same fashion he killed his wife and daughter. Someone may even volunteer the services for free.

Ari, he didn't kill her because she was white, he killed her because he is a selfish, lying bastard. There are plenty of white men who kill their white girlfriends/ wives for the same reasons. It's not a race issue. I DO think that she was forewarned that he'd do something reprehensible to her because she had been getting abused by him in the duration of the relationship. It's too late to say that she should have left the FIRST time he hit her.

One time my dad was working with a black woman and the black woman accidentally cut herself and he went over and helped to bandage her up. Later on, he found out through coworkers that she was a carrier of Hepatitis and hadn't warned him. When he was asking to be tested for hepatitis because of this the company danced around the issue and finally gave in but couldn't confirm or deny for him whether she actually had it due to HIPAA (even though it directly affected him).

Thankfully they did let him get tested and he came back clean.

However, the woman accused him of being "racist" and started mumbling about her black gang member friends, which she shot the black power fist to when she got out of a related meeting where my dad could see it.

He had to go through all this because he helped this woman when she needed help.
