Nationalization?
« on: February 10, 2007, 03:45:36 PM »
Everyone,

Does anybody think that nationalizing the oil industry, as the likes of Chavez' Venezuela have done, is at all the answer for energy independence? Maybe without an oil industry anymore we would act to do what is best for us instead of their profits.

The oil industry controls the government. It is the other way around.

I could be very wrong on this however the way I see it the bigest obstacle to America's energy independence is the environmentalist. They have blocked every attempt of the oil companies to drill into domestic sources of oil in coastal waters of America. All the while they have had other countries drilling right outside the limits of Americas waters.
G-d forbid a new refinery is put into operation or a new oil well field is opened on domestic land. The oil companies have given up pushing for new domestic sources and have found money can also be made due to tight supply and disruptions.
The sad fact is I don't think the oil companies  came up with this scenario themselves it was forced on them by the environmentalist. Now that they see how well it brings in the big bucks it will be hard to get them to change.

In a capitalist society nationalization would be self-defeating. Yacov and cjd are both right: the oil industry calls the shots AND environmentalists are a roadblock to domestic oil developement.

We must get OFF the oil standard altogether. Why? Simply because the more oil we buy the more we strengthen oil-supplying Muslim terrorist nations. No one puts it better than Chaim ben Pesach on the JTF.ORG website:

Every drop of oil that we import from Muslim terrorist regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Iran helps to finance the development of nuclear weapons that will someday murder millions of Americans. The U.S. must begin an emergency crash program to achieve energy independence by developing energy alternatives which will render oil obsolete. We must also begin an emergency crash program to develop cars and other motor vehicles that do not use gasoline.
