Ultra-Orthodox? wig shop unveils 'Sarah Palin Wig'
« on: October 12, 2008, 09:16:52 PM »

America's most controversial hockey mom has inspired a new item made for religious women that probably isn't sold up there in Alaska, gosh darn it!

The 'Sarah Palin Wig,' based on the hairstyle of the Last Frontier State governor and GOP vice presidential candidate, is the latest head covering to go on sale at Sheitel.com, a Brooklyn wig shop and Web site for Orthodox Jewish women who maintain modesty by concealing their natural hair.

"One of our stylists thought it would make a good style, so we produced it," said Boruch Shlanger, one of Sheitel.com's owners, in an e-mail to The Shmooze. "It is very easy to maintain, and is a very classic look, yet fashion forward!"

Wigs- expecially good looking ones are not acceptable according to the Hachamim (expecially all the Sefardi one's, and most Askenazi ones would probably also not allow a wig like that).

How would a "good looking wig" be defined, exactly?

I dont know, but a wig is not good. Better to have a scarf (or a hat) or some other head covering.

Tzvi, I do understand your point, but we are thankful that people are at least trying to do Halacha. If this is all they can do and they are trying to embrace modesty, then G-d bless them for it.

Not true.   You may want this to be the case, but it's simply not true.

I've yet to see any orthodox women wearing a "non good looking" wig!   They are all good looking ones.  And all very lifelike.  If they weren't, they'd probably all opt for the scarf instead!

pretty women look nice in headscarfs.

I think jewish women prefer the anonymity of the wig.  They don't get pestered by annoying liberal-multicultural gentiles that are desperately interested in the jewish religion.  They just want to do their job and not be treated differently.

Oh, that wasn't what I meant.   Of course they do.  I was saying as a response to Tzvi's comment where he said that "good looking wigs" are not permitted.   I'm saying that if the wigs didn't look good, women wouldn't wear them.   And they'd all wear the head scarves.   I actually prefer the 'non-wig' hair coverings, personally...

Not as a tradition, but because the wig can get uncomfortable.

This is unfortunately true.

Some did it and had good reasons (in Europe so the women would not get raped). But overall just do it like that, and now, is not good at all. Infact women who shave their heads are doing something that is characterized by certain female demons (Lilim Ysv).
The whole prupose of covering the heads is so that OTHER men dont look at you and the only one who is to enjoy the wife is the husband. Now, what is the point for a women to shave her natural hair and put on an expensive wig- to look good when she's outside and attract other men, and look horrible to the husband ?(even the thought of a women without her natural hair is repulsive to me, and I would guess for most other normal men too.)

How about this, what if she had a short, but still attractive hairstyle under the wig?

Personally, I'm very bad at telling what a wig looks like vs. real hair.

And I agree with Tzvi on this one.  What's the point of having a nice looking wig, made out of human hair that looks real to most people, only to show an unattractive shaved head to your husband?

Why not just cover your natural hair with some kind of scarf or hat?

Then ask her husband, or you find yourself, 1- Sefardi Posek who allows it.
And this isn't just a Sefardi/Askenazi thing, I think, expecially recently their was this whole thing of wig burning (expecially after they found out that the hair was coming from Indian Idolatry).

One leniency that can be made (and what I heard) is that if a lady is not covering her head at all, then it would be better to have a wig (but that is a leniency, it isn't the preffered thing, and I dont know if it is according to all, but I heard 1 Rav say).

I saw an episode of curb your enthusiasm once where Larry David (Yimach Shmo) made fun of hasidic Jews and said they used a sheet.

I am not convinced that Larry David, for his sin of being an apostate, and open about it, merits to be cursed with the same curse that jews use of hitler and arafat.

Who are you copying when you do that?

Would Chaim curse Larry David like that?

I notice that of the small handful of people that do it, 3/4 of them are not jewish.

I would be suprised if Larry David "made fun", like a bad school child, in a taunting relentless malicious way.  I've seen him and he does some quality comedy. He is a comedian.
