Don't take it for granted...
« on: October 24, 2008, 02:52:36 AM »
Don't take it for granted that:

We have the right to speak our minds, choose our friends, and worship freely;

We can move from place to place;

We can choose our own vocation;

We have a powerful army to protect us;

We can protect ourselves;

We can choose our leaders;

We have the ability to find out what we want to about our government;

We can marry whomever we choose;

We can choose what we want to buy;

We can go to school and learn;

If we get sick, there are a number of good doctors who can help us get better;

We have any number of choices in media;

We have many different types of cultural expressions to consume;

We can buy and sell;

We can leave and come back;

Our water is relatively clean;

Nobody tells us what we can't read;

We have many beautiful things to look at (American geography is some of G-d's best work);

Our legal system is comparitively fair;

We are allowed to criticize and expose injustice;

There are many more, but it's late.  Please remember to appreciate these treasures.  Not every country has them.  On November the 4th, many people will be voting in favour of giving up some of these.  Nobody with an understanding of how rare and precious it is to be an Americn could do this.  Maybe the way to win this election is not simply through fear, but through simple reminders to our fellow citizens that they ought not take this country for granted.  I don't want to see these gifts thrown away.

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities
Duet 16:13-14
