Iran urges immediate act on Gaza
« on: December 28, 2008, 01:59:48 PM »
Iran has called on member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to take urgent measures to stop Israeli crimes in Gaza.
Iran's Parliament Speaker, Ali Larijani on Sunday said Israel's brutal attacks on the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip are nothing short of "genocide".

In a meeting with Mahmud Erol Kilic, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), Larijani said that Islamic countries should make use of their utmost capabilities to stop Israeli atrocities in the Gaza Strip and support the Palestinians.

At least 300 people have been killed and over 1,000 wounded after Israeli warplanes dropped more than 100 tons of bombs on Gaza on Saturday and Sunday.

Israel's attacks were the bloodiest assaults in the Middle East in the past six decades. Tel Aviv says the military operation is aimed at taking out Hamas compounds throughout the coastal sliver.

However, Hamas has vowed to launch rocket strikes in retaliation to the attacks on Gaza.

The US National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said on Saturday that Washington urges Tel Aviv to 'avoid civilian casualties as it targets Hamas in Gaza'.

On Sunday the US blocked a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing assaults on Gaza. The council, however, called for an end to all military activities in the region.

The Israeli media claimed that some 240 targets, including the office of the Gaza governor, had been attacked since Israel launched its massive offensive on the Gaza Strip on Saturday.
