WASHINGTON - A new Field Poll shows Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California appears to be in the fight of her political career.

The survey released Thursday shows a statistical tie between the three-term incumbent and two of her potential Republican challengers in hypothetical matchups.

Boxer has won by progressively larger margins in each of her previous re-election campaigns.

This year, she faces strong headwinds from the recession, which has left California with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

The poll shows 51 percent of likely voters have an unfavorable opinion of Boxer.

In the Republican primary, Tom Campbell leads Carly Fiorina 28 percent to 22 percent among likely voters, with 9 percent favoring state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore.
