A U.S. defense agency says it cannot confirm yet a claim by Israeli President Shimon Peres that Syria is arming Lebanon's Hezbollah with long-range Scud missiles, but another Israeli minister has warned if such an attack develops, his nation's response would be to return Syria to "the Stone Age," according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

In response to a G2 Bulletin inquiry, U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kelly said the agency's analysts cannot confirm that Syria is delivering Scud missiles in Lebanon to the Hezbollah. He also could not confirm whether Hezbollah units are being trained in Syria on the use of Scuds.

The lack of confirmation suggests that the agency has no "overhead" or satellite evidence of Scuds in Lebanon, despite Peres' comments that were based on what sources said was Israeli intelligence.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley voiced similar reservations over the report. He said that the State Department cannot verify Israel's reports and "that we've raised the issue with the Syrian government and continue to study the issue. But obviously, it's something of great concern to us."

If Israel is attacked with the Syrian-supplied Scuds said to be in Hezbollah's possession, Israeli officials warned of an immediate retaliation against Syria itself.

"We'll return Syria to the Stone Age," said an unnamed Israeli minister.
