Israel says ancient Muslim gravestones 'built illegally'

Israel’s Jerusalem Municipality said Thursday that tombstones razed by authorities a day earlier in a 12th-century Muslim cemetery were “built illegally with the aim to take over the plot.”

At least 15 tombstones and structures were torn apart Wednesday in the Mamilla (Ma’man Allah) cemetery, the Al-Aqsa Foundation for Waqf and Heritage said. The latest demolitions follow the disinterment of over 1,500 graves in 2009 to make way for a controversial Museum of Tolerance. The foundation quickly denounced the move, describing it as a “heinous crime.”

Mandated with renovating burial grounds, the foundation said its crew led by Fawaz Hassan and Mustafa Abu Zuhra tried to block the bulldozers with their bodies but were removed by police. Israeli authorities razed the tombstones in the northeastern part of the cemetery, despite the crew’s objection, and left an hour after.

A spokesman for Israel’s national police did not return multiple calls seeking comment, but the Jerusalem municipality said in a statement that it had “located illegal activity at the site,” filed a complaint with police, and “turned to the Israel Land Administration, who owns the land, to restore [it] to its prior condition. The ILA cleared the vacant tombstones, which were built illegally with the aim to take over the plot.”

Dating back 1,000 years, the Mamilla cemetery was an active burial ground until 1948, when West Jerusalem became part of the newly declared State of Israel. According to Muslim tradition, it is the burial site of the Prophet Mohammad’s companions, Salah Ad-Din’s warriors, Sufi saints, as well as judges, scholars, and Palestinian dignitaries.

Plans for the museum, funded by the Simon Wisenthal Center, a Jewish charity in the US, were unveiled in 2004 and sparked immediate controversy. Palestinian descendants with relatives buried at the site have launched a lengthy legal and public relations battle in a bid to stay the museum’s construction. In 2008, however, they lost a case before Israel’s High Court, which ruled in favor of the museum.

One descendant is US academic Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University. He told Ma’an that “If it is true that further graves in the Mamilla cemetery have in fact been bulldozed, then clearly the ongoing process of desecration of this sacred space has not been halted by the efforts of the families of those interred there to bring this issue before a variety of international forums.”

“As far as the Israeli authorities are concerned, some graves merit respect, and some do not. Those of our ancestors in this cemetery, going back in some cases for many hundreds of years, obviously do not.”

In February, Mamilla descendants filed a petition with the UN, later submitting evidence compiled by the Israeli daily Haaretz, which revealed in a three-part expose the extent of disinterment, publishing photographs of remains being stuffed haphazardly into cardboard boxes. The families of those buried at the site say the Israeli government has yet to inform them of the location of their relatives’ remains.

Gideon Sulimani, an archeologist with Israel’s Antiquities Authority who carried out the initial digs in 2009, told the newspaper at the time: “They call this an archaeological excavation but it’s really a clearing-out, an erasure of the Muslim past. It is actually Jews against Arabs.”

In June, Nazareth-based journalist Jonathan Cook revealed that a second dig was in the works, with Israel planning a courthouse on the historic site. At least three tombstones were removed that same month.

Most of the graves are unrecognisable and in disrepair, owing to decades of neglect. Descendants of those buried there say personal attempts to replace or maintain tombstones have been repeatedly quashed and swiftly removed by Israeli authorities. The Al-Aqsa Foundation’s renovation crew says the municipality regularly thwarts their attempts to maintain the site.

The municipality says it “will not allow extremist elements to act illegally to change the status quo.”

I'm not sure what to think of this story. Why do they want to build a museum on top of a cemetery?

100% of all Muslims dead and alive should be jettisoned from Jewish land.  Good job Israel.  8)

Eliminating Muslim Nazi graves to make way for the, Simon "The Nazi Hunter" Wiesenthal 'Museum of Tolerance', is fitting.  There will be no display for the tolerance of Nazis, German or Muslim, at this museum.

Exactly. We won't even allow Muslim graves once we are in charge.

I think that story missed a major point... They were not grave sites... they were fake graves with no bodies in them... The shifty arabs were marking graves which had no bodies in them for the purpose of claiming the ground as arab...

Exclusive: Arabs Faking Graves to Grab Jerusalem Land
Av 24, 5770, 04 August 10 05:20
by Gil Ronen, Chezki Ezra and Shimon Cohen

(Israelnationalnews.com) [flash:124953]

In the heart of Jerusalem, dozens of new tombs are being added to an ancient cemetery, but no one is buried beneath them. Jewish observers and sources in the Jerusalem Municipality say the pretend-graves are simply a Muslim project for grabbing land.

The Mamilla Cemetery is located on the outskirts of Jerusalem's Independence Park (Gan HaAtzmaut), between Agron and Hillel Streets. It is an ancient Muslim cemetery containing several dozen graves, which has been in a state of severe disrepair for more than a century, despite being under the supervision of the Muslim Waqf.

In recent days, however, there has been much hustle and bustle in the cemetery, and its seems to be growing from day to day, cutting into land that is a part of Independence Park. Trucks, tractors and other heavy machines come and go, dumping building materials, which workers then shape into Muslim-style tombstones with no one buried beneath them. Dozens of these faux-graves are being created on the eastern end of the park, in row after row, where only bare earth and grassy areas existed until now.

Some of the fake tombs have been completed and others are in the process of being built.

Arutz Sheva's Chezki Ezra visited the site following a tip from a local resident and was surprised to see many dozens of new "tombs." He estimated their number as approaching 100.%ad%

Funding from the Gulf?
“They are trying to take over this territory,” a municipality gardener said. The Arab workers who dumped stones at the site did not answer Arutz Sheva's questions and made haste to leave instead. Other municipality employees who were at the site confirmed that the construction is a Muslim land grab. Several tombstones were dug up, revealing no ancient graves or even remnants of graves underneath them, they said, adding that the municipality “is aware of the activity” and that it has initiated legal moves against the “tomb planters.”

Another worker at the site said that the “tomb planting” project was being financed by a rich Muslim from one of the Gulf states. Yet another employee said that the police “instructed the Muslims to stop their activity immediately” but that they are ignoring that instruction.

Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem David Hadari heard about the matter from Arutz Sheva and was dumbstruck by the news. “I am in a state of total shock,” he said. “Arutz Sheva has discovered the naked truth, and I intend to immediately turn to the Municipality Director to make use of all of the municipal enforcement arms so that while honoring the Muslim's deceased, we will not honor Muslim fictions that are simply intended to capture more land in eastern Jerusalem.”

MK Nisim Ze'ev (Shas) said the matter was a very serious one. “The Jerusalem Municipality is allowing complete abandonment of territory and assets," he said. "The Arabs are trying to conquer the Land of Israel in every possible way. If we do not wake up to their conniving ways we will find ourselves before a gaping chasm. We need to plow the area and take down all of the fictitious tombs.”

The apparent impotence of Jerusalem authorities in the face of brazen Arab land-grabs is also apparent in the matter of a huge wall that has been built around a Turkish cemetery.

The Muslims may be taking advantage of Israeli reluctance to act assertively regarding its land, in the face of pressure from the Obama administration over Jewish construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and the razing of illegal Arab structures there.

Municipality Responds
In response to Arutz Sheva's query, the Jerusalem Municipality said: “The Jerusalem Municipality located the illegal activity at the site yesterday. The Municipality has contacted the Israel lands Authority as the owner of the land to return things to their former state. The Municipality will not allow extremist elements to act illegally to change the status quo.”

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities

ANCIENT?  LOL.

Look at the ridiculous deception employed by the media.

A7 ran an expose` the day before showing that the Muslims had erected phony graves overnight in an attempt to expand the boundaries of their "cemetary."   The govt acted on that report by A7 and dismantled the phony graves.

"Arab League Blasts Israel for Dismantling Fake Cemetery"

by Gil Ronen
Follow Israel news on Twitter and Facebook.

The Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Palestinian Affairs Mohamed Sobeih on Saturday condemned the digging up of what he said were Muslim graves in Jerusalem's Mamillah cemetery by Israeli authorities.

According to a report filed from Cairo by Chinese news agency Xinhua, the cemetery “includes the graves of the companions of Prophet Mohammed” and “is the biggest and oldest graveyard in the Palestinian lands.”

The report completely ignored the facts reported by Arutz Sheva in an exclusive feature: the tombstones were brand-new constructions and were being faked, in an attempt to grab some land from Independence Park (Gan HaAtzmaut).

Sobeih told reporters: "The Arab League is closely following up this heinous crime when Israel has planned to establish a museum of tolerance instead of the cemetery."

"Israel is destroying the Muslims' graves when Arabs are restoring the Jewish ones everywhere in the world," he added.

It is not clear what Jewish graves Sobeih was talking about. At least as far as Israel is concerned, Arabs have been very busy defiling Jewish tombs in recent years. These include the Tomb of the Patriarchs, Joseph's Tomb, the Tombs of Joshua and Caleb, and many synagogues.

It doesn't matter whether these were fake graves, real graves from the twelfth century, or from 12,000 BCE. No Islamic site should be allowed to exist in the Holy Land.
