Question about Roman occupation of Israel?
« on: December 13, 2010, 10:37:49 AM »
When the Romans had occupied Israel as part of the Roman Empire under Herod, what had happened to the Jewish military? Were the majority of the occupiers Romans or were Jews recruited into the Roman military? Were they two separate groups? I read there were some Jewish people like Tiberius Julius Alexander and even Jewish military units such as the Regii Emescni Iudaei.

Herod must have been allowed to keep some troops of his own. He had to have the sort of "muscle" so he could collect taxes, persecute real and imaginary opposition, etc.
But the real power behind him which set him in power and kept him were Roman troops. According to Josephus, when the Romans set Herod as king they made a great slaughter that he had to plea them to stop so else he would have no subjects left to rule over.

Being a usurper, a tyrant, and an Edomite convert, there is no doubt that the only think that kept the people from overthrowing him is the Roman army.

Have you read the excellent history pages at Aish.com?

There is a complete History of the Jews there...

You shall make yourself the Festival of Sukkoth for seven days, when you gather in [the produce] from your threshing floor and your vat.And you shall rejoice in your Festival-you, and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maidservant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow, who are within your cities
