Erica, Columbus never proclaimed to be a spiritual and moral leader for his people and the world. Your g-d did. Thus, we will hold him to higher standards. Name one thing that your g-d did that was motivated by scriptural ideals or just plain human altruism.

And no, hanging out at the casinos and strip clubs with his pals Jesse Jackson and Malcolm X does not count.
My G-d? No MAN is G-d to me, not even MLK. He was someone who set the civil rights movement in motion and helped to make it possible for blacks to vote and get equal treatment when it comes to using the same restrooms, drinking from the same water fountains, and yes, sitting anywhere on the bus  you'd like. That dosen't mean that he's a G-d to me, but he was a Godsend.

My point exactly - he was a G-dsend to the black people - what did he do for the country?

Imerica - I don't understand your post.
I have never bashed MLK on this forum.  I just don't believe that he deserves a National Holiday in his name or all the attention afforded him each year.
What makes him worthy of that?
I can think of people who have had a greater impact on the lives of more Americans
How about a Thomas Alva Edison or Henry Ford Day?   ;)

You make arguments against Columbus forgetting the time in which he lived.
That just voids out your whole argument in mind.

You forget the natives were getting restless and needed to have a black holiday, bottom line there was no black man but MLK, so you can say he got his holiday for a lack of there being any other black man.
P.S. remember February is black history month, I don't remember them doing anything worth while to have a history month but at least it's the shortest month of the year.
I think Jesse jackson and AL sharpton should bring suit against the government for it being in the shortest month of the year, because this is definitely a discrimination case.

Oh no - why did you bring up that shortest month thing?
What are you thinking JB?
How much history can you make up?  28/29 days seems long enough to me.  ;)

He helped to unite blacks and whites. (Well, those who WANTED to be united, anyway.) That's what he did for our country. Me saying that he's a Godsend doesn't make him a God. No more than Thomas Edison inventing the light bulb or primitive man discovering that gathering shrubbery and striking two peices of flint together made one hell of a fire. Everyone is here for a reason. MLK and anyone else who did some kind of good to people served their purpose.

Its only 29 days every 4 years, mind you! LOL Besides blacks have been in America long enough to have history to speak of and pass on. I'm fine with BHM being celebrated in February. I was born on the first of that month. :) in the YEAR OF THE WOMAN! Irony all over the place. lol

Dearest Imerica,

MLK might have had a dream, but loking at it now do you thinhk it's gone pear shaped?

Was it his dream that blacks could act lawlessly with authorities frightened to treat them the same as whites for fear of false accusations of racism?

Was wilding and viscious attacks on the jewish and korean communities going unpunnished part of his dream?

I'm asking these question in earnest, sweetie.....I'm not having a go at you.

You totally lost me now...primative man - shrubbery - flint.
How about we have MLK and anyone else who did some kind of good to people served their purpose day in the place of just MLK day.
That way it covers anyone who may have ever done any little bit of good for our country but not enough to warrant their own holiday - then it would be an all inclusive holiday.  That was MLKs goal - right?
At this point...my child would ask me if I were being sarcastic...I would have to say...YES!  ::)
So as usual let us just agree to disagree.
I want to always see the American flag flown with pride in this country above or along side all others - to get back on the point of the thread.

Imerica you said
I don't condone the rapes, slavery or cannibalizm ... those things make me sick but it is what happened in the past.
So why take Columbus out of his place in history and hold him to different standards?
It is what happened in the past.  Exploration and discovery.

P.S. Despite popular rumor he wasn't confronted by a civilized peace pipe smoking Indian population.

I could ask the same question about what you all think of MLK. The man has been dead for 40 or so years and yet  you all call him  n ames as if he's standing right in front of you. When the FBI files officially open up about him and all of the things you say are proven to be true about him I'll think about his character then but me bashing Columbus (someone who has been dead for hundreds of years) and you and others here bashing MLK isn't different at all.
Imerica don't ask questions that have answers you may not want to hear. King was not all that his buffed up image represents. The real person that blacks should thank is Robert Kennedy. He above any other living person did more for black civil rights then King could ever do. King was an idiot he would say all that non violent garbage and then rile blacks up to the point that they were looting and burning down half the cities in the country. I watched this garbage on the news each night with my parents back then in the 60's and remember seeing it to this day. Then you would see the fool (MLK) the next day spouting his non violent crap all over again. In the last few years of his life MLK and his minions would start their cr-p about "its going to be a hot summer if we don't get civil rights" the worst disturbances of this sort were always in the cities where this animal was protesting. I remember after John Kennedy was shot (no great loss) Robert made sure that poor old LBJ signed the civil rights bill into law. I still shake my head each time I see that signing on TV you can see the distaste LBJ had for being made to sign that garbage because of the memory of a dead president.
You say you will see for yourself when they unseal kings files? Don't hold your breath for any unsealing by the time that day comes the country will be so PC that file will never see the light of day. I remember when Reagan was getting ready to sign the MLK holiday into law he was at a press conference and they asked him about signing the bill. He said he would sign it but he said after seeing the sealed files and if they were ever opened the American people would be left wondering why this man was ever given a national holiday. So right there you know the files will never be fully unsealed.
Now I have a question for you Imerica. Not that I have any sympathy for them but I could see why the indigenous people could possibly dislike Columbus and what came after him however I do not see why blacks get so nuts over this.  Is it all part of the PC message or what? In all seriousness please explain if you know.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on the MLK issue. As for why blacks get so nuts over Columbus there are many reasons. My own is that I'd like to think I have common sense. And common sense tells me that you can'd discover a place with people already living there and then NAME them as if you sprinkled fairy dust on the ground and there they were. ALSO, some African Americans have Native American ancestors as well. My grandmother was half Souix Native American and half Black. That would only make me .25 Native American though. So its not about PC at all.

OK Imerica we will agree to disagree. I wrote you a longer post before that responded  to your post  to me but I guess even my computer likes MLK because just as I was getting ready to send it it vanished never to be found. Anyway we will no doubt touch on the subjects at another point.

I don't speak like that so why don't YOU speak/ write as if you have some sense...

The International Year of the woman started in 1974, the year I was born in. Look it up.

If you get to be proud of your Jewish Heritage, I can be proud of the fact that I'm a strong woman. Its not feminist garbage. If women allowed abusive, dictating  (those who are) men to run over them, and tell them what they can be or not be,  they'd be weak. I'm definately not that.

You can be anything you want Imerica you live in the US and the year is 2007.  ::)
I'm proud to be a strong woman.
I'm lucky - I have great respect for the men in my life and they for me.
So I don't need the International Year of the Woman(or whatever) to make me strong.
If their goal is to tell women how great they are or could be - that's good.
If they have that you can be great despite men attitude - who needs them.

PS - I'm a strong woman but I am not a man - somethings the male does better and somethings the woman does.
