State of Emergency: Cornel West and 4 Dozen Others Arrested at Ferguson

Ferguson ArrestsFollowing a night when two people were shot in Ferguson, Missouri, A state of emergency was issued in St. Louis County on Monday even as protesters were being arrested on the steps of the federal courthouse there, reports Newsweek.

Academic agitator Cornel West was among those arrested, as were Black Lives Matter protesters DeRay McKesson and Johnetta Elzie, both of whom were released later. Several members of the local clergy were arrested, as well as Reverends Renita Lamkin, an African Methodist Episcopal church pastor, and Osagyefo Sekou, a pastor from the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, who have been prominent protesters in Ferguson since the shooting of Michael Brown.

About 50 people had been arrested there as of late afternoon today.

Protesters also shut down St. Louis’ Highway I-70 at rush hour in both directions by forming a line and holding hands. They also set up barriers with “Ferguson is everywhere” written on them. Traffic was stopped for about 20 minutes.

The Missouri Highway Patrol broke up the roadblock at around 5:50pm and made several arrests in a nearby parking lot. Check out the local Fox News station here for photos.
