Trump too Afraid to Debate Again: Would be ‘Inappropriate’ To Debate Sanders

Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, said in a statement Friday he no longer plans to debate Sanders, a Democratic candidate. The pair suggested this week they would debate to benefit charity.

The bombastic businessman explained he finds it “inappropriate” to spar with Sanders, the U.S. senator from Vermont, because he will likely not win the Democratic nomination. Trump also contended television networks “want to make a killing” and “are not proving to be too generous to charitable causes.”

The Sanders camp earlier in the day said the campaigns received debate offers from broadcast television networks that “include a major contribution to charity.” It added it was “prepared to accept one of those offers” and work with the Trump campaign to set a date and time.

In a separate statement after Trump declined to participate, Sanders said he hoped Trump would change his mind.

“Given that there are several television networks prepared to carry this debate and donate funds to charity, I hope that he changes his mind once again and comes on board,” Sanders said.
