Will Trump Concede Defeat If He Loses?

trump_debateDonald Trump has continually refused to commit to conceding if he loses the presidential race. So what happens if Hillary Clinton wins and he won’t acknowledge defeat?

Nothing, according to NBC News.

“The act of conceding is not a legal act,” said political scientist Rick Hasen, reports NBC News. “It doesn’t have any legal effect as to whether or not someone is declared a winner.”

But experts tell the news organization a refusal by Trump, who has often criticized the election as rigged, would be unusual.

“Because Donald Trump is not conventional politician looking ahead to run again, he’s going to have less inhibitions in criticizing the result and the process,” historian Scott Farris, who has studied losing presidential candidates, told the NBC.

But experts note a refusal to concede will make it far more difficult for the public to accept the election’s outcome.

“How are we going to solve problems through policies if we have 40-45 percent of the people not accepting the result?” Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, told NBC.

“Our system could be doomed, and our country could be doomed.”

And another expert tells The Sacramento Bee newspaper it’s difficult to predict what Trump would say if he loses.

“He is consumed by the effort not to be defined as a loser, so it’s hard to predict his response to such a difficult moment,” said Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University.

“I would expect him to be bitter, and to be angry, and in some ways to deny the reality of what just happened.”
