I live in Britain, a variation of that was passed down, one of my great grandfathers. It was to be a Jew in the home, and a gentleman outside.
There is a bit of a bad implication there. But I sympathise with that statement. Even nowadays I hear Orthodox jews say they do not want to wear a tallit outdoors (e.g. on shabbat when no eruv), because it flaunts their jewishness in the non-jews faces.
