Duties & Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Cataloging Services Librarian, the Librarian for Law of the Islamic World bears primary responsibility for building and organizing the Library’s collections of materials on Islamic law and the positive law of the Islamic world. Selection of materials takes place under the supervision of the Associate Librarian for Research Services.
Duties: Selects new and retrospective materials on Islamic law and the law of the jurisdictions of the Islamic world, in vernacular and Western languages. Analyzes current and retrospective collection strengths and makes recommendations for programmatic change in the collections. Manages the budget for Islamic materials in coordination with the Acquisitions Librarian. Catalogs Arabic monographs, serials, and electronic resources, using AACR2, Library of Congress subject headings, the LC classification system and local classification systems, and OCLC. Oversees the ordering, receipts and processing of Arabic and other non-Western language materials. Supervises staff that assist with processing and cataloging operations. Works with the Acquisitions Librarian and the Serials Librarian on matters relating to the processing of materials. Contributes authority information to the HOLLIS authority file and the LC Name Authority File via NACO. Works with other Bibliographers and other library staff on matters relating to collection development. Serves as primary liaison for the library with the Islamic Legal Studies Program, the Middle Eastern Division of the Harvard College Library, and other organizations and institutions with Islamic interests. Participates in Reference Service and my take on projects related to reference service. Serves on committees in the Library, the Law School, and the Harvard University Library system, as appropriate. Note: this is a 3 year term appointment with option for extension. Extension of appointment dependent on continued funding.
Required Education, Experience, Skills
Basic Qualifications: Required: MLS from an ALA accredited library school, advanced reading knowledge of one of the Islamic Languages, preferably Arabic. Additional Qualificatioins: Graduate degree in Middle Eastern studies preferred. Minimum 2 years cataloging experience in a large academic library, experience with collection development procedures, experience with OCLC and automated cataloging procedures. Familiarity with acquisitions procedures and experience with Islamic book vendors preferred.
