PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Republican campaign dropout Mitt Romney agreed Thursday to endorse Sen. John McCain for the party's presidential nomination and ask his national convention delegates to swing behind the front-runner, according to officials familiar with the decision.

Romney collected 280 delegates during his run through the early primaries and caucuses, enough to move McCain close to the total of 1,191 needed to clinch the nomination a full nine months before the November general election.

The officials who disclosed Romney's plans did so on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a formal announcement later in the day. McCain was campaigning in Vermont and Rhode Island during the day, and added a flight to Boston to appear with Romney to accept the endorsement at his waterfront campaign headquarters.

McCain effectively sealed the nomination last week when Romney withdrew from the race; only former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and libertarian-leaning Texas Rep. Ron Paul remain but both lag McCain in delegates to the GOP's nominating convention this fall.

Romney's decision marked a harmonious end to an occasionally contentious struggle between the two men over the party's presidential nomination. They criticized one another in television ads in state after state, a clash that effectively ended on Feb. 5, when McCain won a string of big-state primaries from coast to coast.

Officials said the former Massachusetts governor made his decision to back McCain earlier in the day, citing a desire to help the Arizona senator wrap up the nomination before too much more time passed and while Democrats still did not have a nominee.

McCain is on a steady march toward amassing the 1,191 delegates he needs, but Huckabee has proven an unexpectedly durable challenger. With a strong appeal to evangelical conservatives, Huckabee defeated McCain in two out of three states that chose delegates last weekend, and ran a far stronger race than expected before losing the Virginia primary on Tuesday.

McCain began the day with 843 delegates, to 242 for Huckabee.

At stake in Tuesday's Wisconsin primary are 40 GOP delegates.

The former Massachusetts governor suspended his candidacy last week after it became apparent that toppling McCain would be near impossible to gain the delegates needed to defeat McCain.

In a speech before conservative activists in Washington, D.C., Romney acknowledged the difficulty in overtaking McCain. "I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," he said at the time, adding that doing otherwise would increase the chances that Democrats would reclaim the White House.

At the time, Romney did not offer an endorsement, and McCain said he did not seek one when the two spoke by telephone.

Romney was the only one of McCain's primary opponents who had resisted lining up behind the nominee in waiting; Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson both have endorsed him.

no, we'll most likely be screwed if OBama is president for the next four years.

McCain too, but not as bad.

Re:  "...if OBama is president for the next four years..."

There is no absolute direct parallel, but this past week revealed a "cult of personality" fixated on Obama which is in many ways reminiscent of the German peoples' in the 1920's-1930's "willingness to believe" in almost anyone who would promise to restore their pride and self image and who would claim that they "had all the answers" to their national problems.

Thus, we find a large disenchanted and disenfranchised population, from both major political parties, who now "have lost their faith" in the American system of government, who no longer are willing to believe and follow the likes of Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee, McCaine, and the Clintons, because they now know that "the machine" will continue on its path of destruction after all the traditional candidates' promises are broken and forgotten the day after the inauguration.

The hysteria we are now witnessing is indeed a phenomenon of a "mass movement psychology"...whereby a large number of people who normally would find nothing in common with each other, are now so disillusioned and desperate that they will fall at the feet of any candidate who offers them "leadership which will change direction"...their one last hope for a sense of nationhood.

Clearly this is what is being displayed all across America this past week, because whites who normally vote "anti-black" are now so desperate that they are practicing self-delusion; believing that a mixed-race candidate can "heal" the rift between the races in America.  The black electorate, is for the most part throwing their lot in behind Obama simply because he is half-black, or at the very least non-white.  The Democrats who recently ran for office on an anti-Bush platform of promising to end the Iraq war and repeal all of Bush's legislation, proved to their stalwart followers that all but a couple of the candidates were huge liars which turned and sided with 'the enemy' once in office.  That sealed Hillary's fate.  Likewise, the Republicans who worshipped Bush, now realize that they also were scammed; it would seem that the "Conservative Family Values" candidates, once in office, have been the most immoral and corrupt crowd ever seen in Washington.

Now a majority of Americans can sense the deterioration of America on all fronts domestic and foreign, and are "willing" to take a chance at a "long shot" candidate.

That one with the most jive, the best promises, and almost a blank slate for a track record is Senator Barak Hussein Obama...he of the Black Muslims who claims to be Christian and offers "peace" and "free medical care"; he who offers his hand in friendship to all dictators and terrorists bent on our destruction.

Even so, the majority of Americans must be "past the point of caring", as they so clearly reveal in this hysteria of idol-worship invented around a repulsive looking non-entity who doesn't speak in Ebonics.

I suggest all reading this keep their passports active.

Well it will be Bush #3 and all we have to do is fight remember how the Amnisty bill was defeted by the people and talk radio. I have a feeling that real right wingers will pressure McCain to the the right thing. But I feel that Hillary needs to win the Democratic nomination because she is by far easier to beat. Why more Americans like Obama is behond me.

The fact that no real conservatives actually wanted McPain but put him in because of the "he's our best chance of defeating......." factor may be a plus. They might vote for more hardline congressional candidates to balance things out.

After Obama or McCain get done with us we may look on the Bush's with a new point of view. I really believe that we are entering a period of decline for the United States. Bush was evil on selective issues however I never felt that he was a complete sellout.

Interesting! I would have had to ask. Then again depending on what sort of ignoramus was telling me something like that I may have been able to guess what they had in mind.

Newman, you beat me to it. If Obama gets elected I truly believe that he is the anti-Christ. Just think of all the descriptions of the anti-Christ, he will be very charismatic and well liked, he will dupe many people into following him, etc. but he will be evil, is a follower of islam anything but? He will secure a position of world leadership. At first it was just an aberration that this man was even competitive, now it is getting beyond scary.

What happened to Romney asking Huckabee to drop out of the race because McCain wasn't conservative enough? I don't think any of those votes should be redirected because the voters did not vote that way, but if anything, most of the people who voted for Romney on Feb 5th did so because they did not want McCain as President. How twisted is this?

Caribou(hope I am spelling it right) is an animal, sort of like a smaller moose. One of the main reasons the liberals use for arguing against drilling in ANWR is because it would upset these animals that reside there.
