Former Chief Sephardic Rabbi a Kahanist?
« on: March 13, 2008, 05:38:43 PM »
Did anyone see the documentary on Kahanists PBS put out? Near the end he was welcoming a Kahanist prisoner who just got out of jail.

Click on Chapter 4, and skip until 1:25 seconds, and you'll see him

I'm wondering is this the former chief sephardic rabbi or someone else? I might be confused because the style of dress is almost identical to the current chief.

Thats Rav Moredechi Eliyahu Shalita. Not a kahanist officially, but does have right wing views and rulings. I also belive that he was the Rav who got Rabbi Kahane's son Benyamin Kahane and Talia Kahane married, and their are pictures where they were together.
The Academy of Elijah taught, whoever studies the laws (of the Torah) every day, (he) is guaranteed to have a share in the World to Come.

‏119:139 צִמְּתַתְנִי קִנְאָתִי כִּישָׁכְחוּ דְבָרֶיךָ צָרָי
My zeal incenses me, for my adversaries have forgotten Your words.
‏119:141 צָעִיר אָנֹכִי וְנִבְזֶה פִּקֻּדֶיךָ, לֹא שָׁכָחְתִּי.
I am young and despised; I have not forgotten Your precepts.

" A fool does not realize, and an unwise person does not understand this (i.e. the following:) When the wicked bloom like grass, and the evildoers blossom (i.e. when they seem extremly successful), it is to destroy them forever (i.e. they are rewarded for their few good deeds in this World, and they will have no portion in the World to Come!)

He and to a much greater degree his son Shmuel, are known for strongly supporting Rabbi Kahane zt'

His son Shmuel is the Rabbi of Tzfat.

A truly great Jew respected by all. Even by the Haredim of Tzfat.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. Good to know.

It's interesting to see how many people are sympathetic to Kahanist views but don't necessarily endorse them officially. Must be many people throughout Israel who fit this description.

Him and Hacham Ovadia are in 2 different Halachic camps. Hacham Ovadia wants to make  uniform Sephardic Halacha for every1 not just Iraqi. Hacham Mordechai is in the Ben Ish Chai camp. In my gemara Shiur, my rabbi said he heard Hacham OVadia speak, and the next speech was Hacham Mordechai. He said their speeches were 2 polar opposites.

I have heard that Rabbi Mordecai Eliyahu's speed and accuracy in "mass-inspecting" etrogim are a true marvel.

My friend told me that he was able to check them at a rate of something like 1-2 seconds each, so one day they tried to trick the Rav by taking one of the etrogim he had checked already and deemed pasul and put it back in the line, and he kept at the same rate until he got to this one, looked at it and said 'already checked this one'  LOL

Alot of people are upset though about his 'hoya lo tihye' comment before the 'disengagement'.
