Sounds correct. Even in traditionally religious strong hold countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy, church going is very low. I went to Italy last summer and didn't see any church goers. Every single church was relatively empty.
Much people consider the Church and its clerics as a bunch of hypocrites, that use God, and the religion, for their own profit. In fact that provoked Lutheranism, Calvinism and Protestantism, to go away from the Catholic Church. Some other people regard the New Testament as "silly" too "hippy", and find the Tanach too blood-thirsty.
Also much people find it good, that religion has no state influence anymore, because they consider religion as a private affair, not an affair to be guiding a country's political affairs.
We will see how the younger European generation react, maybe they'll become more religious than we and our parents are.
In the middle ages, if I am correctly, the people were mostly analphabetic, and were just required to attend the mass physically, it was spoken entirely in Latin ( I guess until 1968 in the Catholic Church) , and the priests faced the people with their backs.
Since 1968, the mass is spoken in the respective countries' languages, and now, the people are turning away from it.
A while ago , the pope allowed priests to do the mass in Latin without any permission of the bishops, or cardinals.
These masses, tend to attract more people.
This means that the Church might become little by little more conservative,
Don't forget, that there are powerful organizations, like
Opus Dei, that are operating behind the scenes, and have big influence on some state leaders.
I guess Europe is sleeping now, because, materially, it goes too well here. "Why believe in god?" is what most people think. They even find religious people idiots. Political correctness, and anti-racist lobbies protect the muslims today from any criticism on their religion, but mostly the mass media joke about Christianity every day here.
We might need a big conflict, war, disaster, to wake the people up.
Lots of people are also more open to non-European religions, such as Budhism,.... and New-Age, sects.
Also a lot of right wing people here passionately hate Islam, and all "Abrahamic" religions, including Christianity, and Judaism.
Some nationalist like to revive the Odin/Wotan/Jupiter/Zeus religions, as they consider the Roman version of the religion of Jesus total BS.
