No Taxation Without Representation!
One of the prime reasons for the American Revolution was to get rid of high taxes.
Back in the late 1760's the British used tax money to occupy the newly conquered Quebec. This built frustration in the Thirteen Colonies because they had no say in what happened to their money. "No Taxation Without Representation" became a slogan in the Colonies as they strived for independence.
That's what I know off the back of my mind. I hope it's accurate.
