by Maayana Miskin
(IsraelNN.com) The B'Tselem organization published a response to the terrorist attack in Jerusalem on Thursday in which the group sharply criticized the attacker for murdering elderly Jerusalem resident Avraham Ozeri of Gilo. However, the group failed to mention the serious injuries inflicted on a police officer in the same attack. The officer suffered stab wounds when he was attacked after asking the terrorist for identification. A second officer was not hurt. In its response to the incident, B'Tselem called attacks on civilians “immoral, inhuman, and illegal.” Murdering civilians “is considered a war crime that can never be justified, whatever the circumstances may be,” the group said. The Palestinian Authority must prosecute those responsible for the attack, and if it fails to do so, other states must do so in its place, the statement said. However, the above comments were made only regarding the death of Ozeri, and not the attack on the officer.
The statement called on terrorist groups, which it referred to as “Palestinian organizations,” to distinguish between soldiers and police officers and civilians. “A distinction must be made between combatants and civilians,” the group said. The statement did not condemn attacks on “combatants,” a term apparently meant to include police officers.
B'Tselem describes itself as a human rights organization dedicated to teaching the Israeli public about human rights abuses committed by Israelis against Arabs. The group sees all territories regained in the 1967 Six Day War as “occupied” and believes they should be given to the PA. It does not condemn attacks on Israeli soldiers as a general rule.
B'Tselem's reports are used by many major news networks, and the group has won several awards. However, Israeli rights groups point out that many of the group's reports are inaccurate and have labeled armed terrorists “civilians,” blamed Israel for the deaths of Arabs murdered by terrorist groups, and issued reports based on Arab testimony with no supporting evidence. The group is primarily funded by foundations in Europe and America. It recently opened offices in the United States.
