Rabbi Kahane often pointed out (rightly) that there is a contradiction between zionism and democracy. This is so obvious that it astonishes me that it needs articulation.
I would like to point out another important contradiction and I wish that people could have had the sense to recognize it before the election. There is a contradiction between freedom and equality. When people have the freedom to live as they choose their results will differ from the results of other people. In a free society consequently, there is little equality. Equality can only be ensured by superimposing it by some governmental authority. Communist societies are egalitarian. They are not however, free.
I put it to you that the American principle of freedom is INFINITELY better than the European tradition of equality (a principle of the French Revolution actually). If one tree is ten feet tall and another is fifty feet tall, they can only be made equal by cutting the larger tree so that it becomes ten feet tall. There is no way to make the shorter tree fifty feet tall.
In a capitalist society I may have $100 and you may have $10, and that is unequal correct? In a socialist society we will both have $2.00. That is more equal, but that is not more moral.
People who elected Obama, did so because they wanted "fairness", which is code for equality. What they failed to realize is that equality is reductive. We can now look forward to a future of lowered living standards, poorer public service, limited opportunity, lowered educational standards, an emasculated private sector, and a decline in Amercia's international standing, but at least we will be equal!
To those who voted for Obama, I say "congratulations!". Soon the rest of us will be just as pathetic and miserable as you are.
