William Jennings Bryan poll

Members and Chaim Ben Pesach in particular,

What is your opinion of William Jennings Bryan, the famous three-time Democratic presidential candidate, Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, and evangelical Christian social activist? I am learning about him right now in class and thought I would ask you all what you think of him.

I had always considered him one of America's finest leaders and a true warrior for G-d, but many websites claim that he made coded references to Jewry in his populist speeches, in which he accused the economic elites of America of crucifying workers and farmers on a "cross of gold". I don't know enough about him, and haven't seen these speeches, to form a judgment on this, but generally I think that if political and economic elites have united against somebody, they're probably good people (look at Sarah Palin). I mean--you don't see America's elites attacking Fag Buchanus ever.

One thing that concerned me a bit is that one of his running mates (Thomas Watson) became, a couple of decades later, a militant anti-Leo Frank activist (the Jewish factory owner falsely accused and convicted of a rape/murder committed by one of his schvartze janitors by the KKK Nazi establishment in Jim Crow Georgia in 1915 and later murdered while in custody) and encouraged his lynching.

So, can any of you submit your thoughts? Gruzinit, I'd appreciate your contributions; I know you know a lot about American history.

A couple things I recall from History class was that he was considered
a "silver-tongued orator" and that he argued in favor of
creationism against Clarence Darrow in the famous
Scopes Trial.

Unless he bought the real thing, one could argue that his investment is also backed by nothing.

Remarkably it was relatively recently that the connection between
money and gold was removed and we were taken off the gold standard

It was actually the Nixon administration that removed gold as the backing of money.  What ensued was the wild inflation of the 1970s.
