A furious race row engulfed Scotland Yard today after controversial Muslim police chief Ali Dizaei failed in his promotion bid.
The chief superintendent - one of Britain’s most senior Muslim police chiefs - was one of 10 officers bidding for the £90,000-a-year rank of commander.
The Metropolitan Police Authority, the body which oversees the Yard, announced today it was promoting only three applicants. A spokesman said: “We were going to appoint up to six depending on the quality of the candidates.”
The decision not to promote Mr Dizaei, left, caused immediate controversy amid claims of race bias by the MPA.
He said: “I am extremely disappointed but I remain proud to be a Met officer and happy to be a borough commander in Hounslow.”
The Metropolitan Black Police Association said it was “extremely disappointed” and highlighted Mr Dizaei’s “exceptional” performance as the officer in charge of policing Hounslow for the last two years.
The association said: “We do not believe the decision of the MPA was free from bias and could not have been reached on the basis of objective and fair criteria.”
It also pointed out that for the last five years not a single black or Asian officer had been appointed to the rank of commander or above by the police authority.
The chief superintendent has been at the centre of controversy since he was acquitted of corruption after a trial at the Old Bailey in 2003.
He was cleared of a charge of perverting the course of justice.
He later won £60,000 compensation from the Met in a deal which involved him dropping a race discrimination case against the force.
