Israel deploys tanks to Gaza border
« on: December 28, 2008, 08:19:01 PM »
Israel has deployed tanks and troops along the border with the Gaza Strip as Defense Minister Ehud Barak hints at a massive ground offensive.
Dozens of Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers were massing at different locations along the Gaza border, AFP reported on Saturday.

The military which pounded the coastal strip aerial attacks carried out by warplanes and helicopters, has warned that it could expand the invasion through ground operations.

The deadly attacks which began earlier Saturday has so far left over 280 people killed and hundreds others wounded.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli cabinet approved a proposal by Barak to deploy some 6,700 reserve recruits as backup, to be engaged in action in case of an emergency.

The regime had long threatened the Hamas movement with a military offensive, warning that the punitive measures against the populated area would be aimed at halting Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel.

The government had also threatened to topple the Hamas government in Gaza.
