In 1918, Ford's closest aide and private secretary, Ernest G. Liebold, purchased an obscure weekly newspaper, The Dearborn Independent for Ford. The Independent ran for eight years, from 1920 until 1927, during which Liebold was editor. The newspaper published "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion," which was discredited by The Times of London as a forgery during the Independent's publishing run. The American Jewish Historical Society described the ideas presented in the magazine as "anti-immigrant, anti-labor, anti-liquor, and anti-Semitic." In February 1921, the New York World published an interview with Ford, in which he said "The only statement I care to make about the Protocols is that they fit in with what is going on." During this period, Ford emerged as "a respected spokesman for right-wing extremism and religious prejudice," reaching around 700,000 readers through his newspaper.[35]

Along with the Protocols, anti-Jewish articles published by The Dearborn Independent also were released in the early 1920s as a set of four bound volumes, in a non-Ford publication in Weimar Republic Germany cumulatively titled The International Jew, the World's Foremost Problem. Vincent Curcio wrote of these publications that "they were widely distributed and had great influence, particularly in Nazi Germany, where no less a personage than Adolf Hitler read and admired them." Hitler, fascinated with automobiles, hung Ford's picture on his wall; Ford is the only American mentioned in Mein Kampf. Steven Watts wrote that Hitler "revered" Ford, proclaiming that "I shall do my best to put his theories into practice in Germany, and modeling the Volkswagen, the people's car, on the model T."[36]

On 1 February 1924 Ford received a representative of Hitler, Kurt Ludecke, at his home. Ludecke was introduced to Ford by Siegfried Wagner (son of the famous composer Richard Wagner) and Siegfried's wife Winifred Wagner, both Nazi sympathizers and anti-Semites. From my own memory I believe that Dr Porsche was also the inventor of the VW engine. I have owned a number of 1960s era VW hippie vans and I loved the 1600cc air-cooled engine which Dr Porsche invented. Early Porsche automobiles utilitized modified air-cooled vw designs.

Zundapp lost interest when its motorcycle business boomed; then NSU took on the project. After NSU bowed out in the face of huge tooling costs, the small car project lay fallow until Germany's newly elected chancellor, Adolf Hitler, decided every German family needed a radio (to be able to listen to his dogma) and either a small car or a durable tractor. In June of 1934, the Third Reich signed a contract to build prototype Volkswagens. By the winter of 1936, three prototypes, the VW3, had been built in the garages of Professor Porsche's home. In early 1937, the Nazi 'oversight' organization, the RDA (Reichverband der Deutschen Automobilindustrie) recommended further development and that 30 additional prototypes be built by Daimler-Benz. During the testing of the VW3O, the Reich selected an estate northeast of Hanover to become the site of the Volkswagen factory. "Die Autostadt" was born; today it is Wolfsburg, still the worldwide headquarters of Volkswagen.

While the Professor undertook co-general management (with a Nazi administrator) of the new plant, his son stayed in Stuttgart and ran the design business. The government gave the car a propaganda-oriented name, the "KdF" - short for Kraft durch Freude ("strength through joy"), the recreation arm of the workers' Labor Front. Refinements to the car were undertaken. Production started but was quickly switched over to the Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen (a "jeep" and its amphibious counterpart) for the suddenly escalating World War II. In 1944, allied bombing destroyed over half of the plant. Only because two huge electricity-producing turbines were unscathed did the British rebuild the plant and restart production of the Volkswagen after the War.

Back in the early '30s the Porsche firm launched a second internal project to design a car to meet a new Grand Prix formula. Hitler had announced a 500,000 RM ($250,000) subsidy for a German firm that would build and campaign cars in the new formula. Daimler-Benz applied and won; Auto Union applied and lost. Auto Union reapplied and took Professor Porsche and his designs to meet with Hitler and his staff. In the now-famous meeting, Porsche convinced Hitler of the merits of the Porsche design. Soon the Grand Prix wars of the Silver Arrows were on, and Mercedes and Auto Union took turns at ascendancy.

Well, not exactly invent, but Adolf Hitler was indeed the driving force behind the car. In the 1930s, cars cost more than most people earned in a year. When Hitler became the chancellor of Germany in 1933, he promoted the idea of a car affordable enough for the average working person. The Volkswagen, which means "people's car" in German, was essentially a political promise to win the public's goodwill.

Hitler met with automotive designer Ferdinand Porsche in 1933 and charged Porsche with creating the new car. The chancellor required that the Volkswagen carry two adults and three children, go up to 60 miles per hour, get at least 33 miles per gallon, and cost only 1,000 reichsmarks. Hitler may also have named the car the Beetle.

In 1938, Hitler had the KdF Wagen factory built to produce the cars designed by Porsche. But by the time the factory was complete, Hitler had invaded Czechoslovakia and Poland. The factory was dedicated to building military vehicles, and the people's car fell by the wayside during World War II.

After the war, the factory ended up in the British section of occupied Germany. The British military re-opened the factory, named it Volkswagen, and finally gave control of the company to the German government.

After 1948, Volkswagen introduced new models across Europe. By 1955, over 1 million cars had been built. The VW beetle started selling in the U.S., and in 1972 the people's car overtook the Ford Model T to become the most popular car ever made.

PARIS — When the rare 1939 Auto Union D-Type commissioned by German dictator Adolf Hitler hits the auction block in February, it is expected to fetch the highest price ever paid for an automobile, according to Christie's.

The car was originally used as a propaganda tool to demonstrate the supposed technological superiority of the Third Reich.

The car was shipped to Russia after World War II and taken apart so Russian scientists could study it. The car, still in pieces, was rediscovered in Ukraine in the late 1980s. The D-Type had an engine mounted behind the driver and four-wheel independent suspension. Its twin-supercharged 3.0-liter V12 churned out 485 horses, giving the car a top speed of 185 mph.

Christie's describes the car as one of five remaining Auto Union D-Types. Auto Union is one of the brands that came together to form Audi.

In 1933, Hitler offered 500,000 reichsmarks to a company that could build a racing car that would demonstrate Germany's technological capability. Mercedes-Benz was the front-runner originally, but Auto Union was able to secure the financing for the revolutionary car. The D-Type cars won several Grand Prix races in Europe, but a number of them were lost or destroyed after the war.

The current record for a car sold at auction was just under $11 million for a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Sports Coupe sold in 1987 by Christie's.

What this means to you: The Hitler connection is impossible to overlook. To an automotive historian, though, this car is noteworthy for its technological importance.

gm cars have all been corporate cars since the 80's. What I mean by corporate is if you buy a chevy you will not have a chevy drivetrain but a gm drivetrain. But most people don't care about that maybe its another reason why they are going under?

Most car companies have always built cars in this way GM prior to 1980 was about the only exception. The GM divisions were run as almost separate car companies. They had their own R&D departments and actually competed against each other..... Most car companies have four or five engine and transmission combinations that they use throughout their divisions. Chrysler and Ford have done this far before GM started. Before the 1980's each of the different GM divisions had their own engines. In the late 70's GM picked what they thought was the best of the bunch and started using them in all the divisions. Some of the engines that were discontinued were actually better then what they retained however many of them were older heaver big block V8 engines that were used in Cadillac. Pontiac and Buick. The surviving V8 was the Chevy small block because it was lighter and more compact it is still being used in some form in the more efficient cars of today. It's the right way to build cars because it saves money and it allows the motor company to have a small number of highly refined engines that give very little problems... Ford Motor company supplies most of the engines in Mazda's cars today. The four & Six cylinder engine Mazda uses are all Ford engines . The engines in most of the newer  Jaguar 8 cylinder cars are Ford engines. It's the same engine you will find in the Lincoln Continentals. Ford motor company dollar for dollar is making some of the best cars and products on the road today.

I don't think they will their minds don't work like that... This year GM has some good values and  most of the line up is actually quite good.  The basic models are the best Cobalt, HHR, Impala, Lesabre. The Escalade is also a good value for the higher priced market. I might have considered buying a GM last year before all that's happened but now I will stick to my Fords.

Engineering is one thing reliability is another. I have found over the years that German cars are over engineered and only get modestly better performance then their cheaper American counterparts. The expense of up keep,  initial investment and the down time makes cars like this impractical for most working Americans. Once they are over a few years old they require a great deal of shop time and their value drops like a stone. I can't sit in a German car without getting bad vibes about their Nazi past.
