2 Chicago men accused of plotting terrorist acts

Terrorism-related charges were filed against two Chicago men today, accusing them of plotting against targets in Western Europe, including "facilities and employees" of a Danish newspaper that printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that sparked riots in the Muslim world.

Charged are David Coleman Headley, 49, and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48.

Headley was described as an American citizen who changed his name from Daood Gilani. He was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving murder and maiming outside the U.S. and one count of conspiracy to provide material support to the conspiracy, according to a release from the U.S. attorney's office.

Rana, a native of Canada, was charged with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign conspiracy involving Headley and three other individuals.

Both men remain in federal custody, officials said.

The Tribune reported in its Tuesday editions that the FBI had arrested a Chicago man -- identified today as Headley -- earlier this month for allegedly being involved in an international terrorist plot with Western European targets.

Headley was taken into custody Oct. 3 before he boarded a flight at O'Hare International Airport to Philadelphia, the first stop on a trip to Pakistan. He planned to meet people with known ties to terrorist organizations that have carried out attacks that have killed U.S. citizens, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Among the alleged targets in the case were Danish newspapers.

After that arrest, dozens of FBI agents from the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Oct. 18 raided a Grundy County meat-processing plant that specializes in Islamic foods.

Rana, the owner of the plant, was arrested at his North Side home the same day as the raid on the First World Management Services plant in Kinsman, a farming town northwest of Dwight.

Agents seized records from the plant, as well as a related North Side business also raided that day, said the source, who is familiar with the investigation.

Mohammad Cartoon Plot Arrests in Chicago Linked to Mosque, Immigration Company

Remember that mysterious FBI raid on a Muslim slaughterhouse in rural Illinois? The raid involved over 100 federal agents, helicopters, and snipers on a meat packing plant that only had 6 employees.

As suspected, the raid was terror related. Dinah Lord and I have been talking about this on and off again since the raid took place. She has this to report:

    WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports the US Attorney's office in Chicago alleges that 49 year old David Coleman Headley, an American citizen who changed his name from Daood Gilani, and 48 year old Tahawar Rana, a Canadian citizen who lives in Chicago, were involved in a plot to support or carry out terror attacks.

    Headley is charged with conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving murder and maiming outside the United States. He and Rana are both charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorism conspiracy.

    Prosecutors contend Headley traveled to Denmark to identify potential targets for a terrorist attack and that Rana helped arrange Headley's travel.

Headley was picked up as he was leaving the country on his way to Pakistan. That along with the material support charge indicates that the two were connected either to al Qaeda or to another Pakistan based terror group, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In the wake of the arrests, Dinah, several readers, and myself have been trying to find out as much as possible about Tahawar Rana. There are several people by that name with internet tracks, but two immediately raised suspicions. One, described as a doctor in Chicago and another who runs an import business in Canada.

But it wasn't until this story about Rana's arrest was published that it became clear that the two Tahawar Rana's were, in fact, the same man.

I'm sure it will come as no shock that Rana is on the board of trustees of the Islamic Society of Cumberland's Masjid Bilal. Here's a screenshot (click for bigger).

Any time an "Islamic Society" is in a name you can bet that the organization is somehow connected to the Islamic Society of North America -- the Muslim Brotherhood's official arm in the U.S. and Canada.

Dinah also tracked down a Halal meat website he runs where he tries to recruit foreigners to work at his meat processing plant.

But wait, there's more, because it seems that Mr. Rana also is somehow connected to an immigration company which it appears he may also own.

His "First World Management Services" also runs the "General Worker" website which claims to be a division of "First World Immigration Services Inc". The website is registered to "Rana, Tahawwur", spelled differently but at the same address matching that of one of Tawahar Rana's businesses.

So, a guy who supports terrorism also helps immigrants come to the United States: what could possibly go wrong?
