Colonel Sanders Crashes UN HeadquartersThe United Nations headquarters in New York City had an unexpected guest Tuesday: Kentucky Fried Chicken founder, Colonel Sanders.
OK, so it wasn't really Colonel Sanders, it was an actor dressed up like him. According to a New York Daily News story, actor Robert Thompson donned the white suit, black bow tie and white wig and beard, evaded security and snuck into the UN headquarters. After Thompson got through security, he came face-to-face with UN General Assembly President Ali A. Treki of Libya and shook his hand, an event that was photographed and sent all over the Internet.
The Colonel Sanders UN break-in came as part of a publicity stunt to generate attention for KFC's new line of grilled chicken. Apparently the fast food chain's been writing to the UN, lobbying for Grilled Nation to be accepted as a state. Cheesy, we know, but it is achieving its intended goal of getting media coverage.
A UN spokeswoman says they are investigating the incident, and were certainly not pleased about it. Even though the image of a fake Colonel Sanders shaking hands with a Libyan diplomat is pretty funny, we think KFC may have taken things a little too far in this case.
