Result of a by-poll in a region of Mumbai came out which has a population of 200000, 55% Muslims. This news should bring hope to all non-Muslim minority regions even outside of India.

THANE/MUMBAI: It was a perfect birthday gift to Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, who turned 84 on Saturday, with the Shiv Sena winning the crucial bye-polls from Thane district's Bhiwandi East seat, which has a sizeable Muslim population - and largely famous for being a powerloom town.
Shiv Sena's Rupesh Mhatre sprang a surprise when he defeated Farhan Azmi, the son of Samajwadi Party's state unit chief Abu Asim Azmi and Congress youth leader and former Deputy Mayor of Mira-Bhayender, Sayed Muzaffar Hussain. While Mhatre got 35,376 votes, Azmi polled 33,700 votes and Hussain was third securing 24,418 votes. A total of 10 candidates were in fray in the bye-elections to Bhiwandi East (137) constituency in Thane district.
It was a big jolt to Azmi Sr as he was the sitting MLA from Bhiwandi East and his son lost the polls. And for Congress it comes as a personal blow to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Manikrao Thakre, who could not secure the Congress win here, despite its performance in the elections to the Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly last year.
The bye-elections were necessitated as Azmi Sr vacated the seat. He had won the assembly polls from two places – Bhiwandi East and Mankhurd. It may be recalled that MNS legislators had manhandled him last year, when he took oath as a legislator in Hindi. Azmi Sr is the deputy leader of the Republican Left Democratic Front.
With this win Sena's strength in the lower House of Vidhan Sabha increased to 45 – one less than that of BJP. ''I give credit of my victory to Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Sena CEO Uddhav Thackeray and all the Shiv Sainiks and it is a birthday gift to the Sena chief,” a jubilant Mhatre said, after registering the win.
For Hussain, a sitting Congress MLC, too it is a major blow. He had filed his papers as an Independent last year from Mira-Bhayender – as the seat went to NCP during the seat sharing talks. He later withdrew – and was rewarded by being given a chance to contest from Bhiwandi East. But he lost the polls.
The elections from Bhiwandi East was largely described as a direct contest between Congress and SP, but Sena winning the seat has dashed the hopes of Congress and SP. Sena's Yogesh Patil had won the seat in the 2004 Assembly elections, but it was snatched by SP in last year's poll. The saffron party fielded a new face, Mhatre, a prominent Sena worker, to take on Farhan.
Congress divided secular votes: Azmi
Mumbai: With the humiliating defeat at the hands of Shiv Sena in Bhiwandi East bye-polls, Samajwadi Party's state unit chief Abu Asim Azmi alleged that the “secular votes” were divided because of Congress. “Congress divided the secular votes and gave the birthday gift to Sena chief Bal Thackeray,” Azmi said in Bhiwandi.
“The SP candidate (his son Farhan Azmi) was ahead till the 16th round, however, the Sena candidate got votes in the last round from the village and rural areas,” he said and alleged that there was “bogus voting” in such areas. He also said that on the day of voting, he and his legislator from Bhiwandi West, Rashid Taher Momon were prevented from entering Bhiwandi East – and this has made the difference.
