Hey!

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, and so far, I'm not happy with it.  Everything is much slower now.  Also, I can't play YouTube videos.  First I got an error message saying I need to download the Adobe Flashplayer plugin, even though I have the current version installed.  Then I tried installing this plugin called "gnash," which didn't help either.  So whenever I try and play a YouTube video, I get an error message saying "an unknown error occurred." 

So I'm just curious if any of you are familiar with Puppy Linux, which seems to be very good for older computers.  Have any of you ever used it?  If so, what do you think?  Is installing it on a partitioned hard drive difficult?

I never used that version, try Linux live CD knoppix.

What browser are you using for youtube?

Funny, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04.
Flash is buggy on Ubuntu.
Uninstall any existing flash.
Go to adobe, get flash there, its free.
It'll still be buggy after that, so be warned.

Thanks White Israelite.  Is Knoppix less resource hungry than Ubuntu?  I'm using Firefox for browsing YouTube.  However, I had the same problem with the Epiphany browser which was included in the upgrade.

Ubuntu is still by far the easiest to use.
Klaus knopper's knoppix is a live CD system, you could install it on a harddrive, but that's not what it was meant for - geeks doing this is fine, not for the masses.

Other easy Linux distributions include:
Fedora
And maybe SuSE -- or Software und System-Entwicklung sieg heil.

Lisa had mentioned Ubuntu so assumed she was looking for a Live version.

Knoppix is pretty easy to install and has a lot of tools you need. Flash was really never 100 percent compatable with Linux but as angrychinesekahanist mentioned, try installing from Adobes site.

I use Knoppix to diagnose systems sometimes.
Very well made. It figures out all your audio, video, network, wifi etc...
But I can't recommend it for regular use.

I'm not saying I'm against it. It can be done easily for experienced users. I do use it for system rescue.
But it just isn't a first choice for normal installation. If you're able to figure it out, that's great.

It was built to be compact. It was made to fit on a CD which is 650MB. Not a lot.
If you install it on a hard drive, you'll get everything found on the CD, which is not a lot.

You'll have to find it [software] on the internet on your own and install it.

I would guess that White Israelite has it installed and is happy with it. I would also guess that he's put a lot into the system.

OK, I tried removing the flashplayer plugin from the synaptic manager, and it seemed to work.  However, when I went to install the .deb file from the Adobe download, I got an error message saying I already had a newer version installed.  So then I used the terminal to install the flashplayer non-free plugin, and it worked.  Now I can play video, and everything seems to work. 

Meanwhile, I burned the ISO images of Puppy Linux onto a CDR for possible future use.  I checked on Distrowatch, and it got a good review.

it seems to be mising some package dependencies, what type of installation did you choose for installing ubuntu? Like Full Packages, Or you manually selected it? I use Ubunutu Several times, didnt face this problem. Fedora is the only other linux version i ever tried.

I use ubuntu and I installed flash manually. Just download the ----.tar.gz package from adobe and unpack it into:

/home/user-name/.mozilla/plugins

Then you will have flash working for firefox as well as Google Chrome / Chromium browser.

but first you must of course remove any other flash installation. Now if you use a 64bit system you might be out of luck because I just saw that adobe don't offer the 64bit alpha version to download any longer. I can email you the one I have though if you need it.
