While Jamaica is laden with problems, and certainly is a 3rd world, I have observed that Jamaicans have a higher degree of self-respect than most blacks in America.  A Jamaican friend of mine from years back used to not want to associate with any US blacks, calling them, "cottonpickers".  He traced his roots back to the "Maroons" who were a tribe which avoided slavery, escaping to inside interior Jamaica upon reaching the Americas.
